Product Description

It is always exciting news in the applique world when Elly Sienkiewicz comes out with a new book. In Elly Sienkiuewicz's Beloved Baltimore Album Quilts we find 25 blocks, 12 quilts for inspiration and numerous embellishment techniques. Album quilts are perhaps the most glorious of all applique quilts. The blocks are often done by many different stitchers and contain symbols that are representative of our culture, both past and present. All the patterns in the book are from the Happiness is in the Journey quilt, one of the quilts from the Houston Special Exhibit. They are sized at 8x8 finished. There is an enlargement chart for those of you who would like to work in a larger size format. You will find wonderful photos and illustrations for various applique techniques from beginning basics to such techniques as weaving fabric for baskets and creating dimensional flowers. Art materials covered include: threads, fabric manipulation, beads and acrylic paints and inks. I also liked the instruction on creating a dog tooth border. The quilts at the 2010 Houston Special Exhibit started from a grain of an idea Elly had in the middle of the night. Over the course of 3 years (2007-2010), 245 volunteers from 36 states and 5 countries created 12 Baltimore Album quilts. The twelve quilts plus an additional 28 quilts from around the world made up the 2010 Houston Special Exhibit. The block makers names are listed along with a map of the quilt to help the reader locate the specific block in the photo of the quilt. I am sure there are names you will recognize. This is a MUST have book for your applique book library, and will be a great resource for both the beginner and the more experienced artist.

HASH(0xa7ee26b4) out of 5 stars Pure delight Nov. 11 2010

Format: Paperback
Beloved Baltimore Album Quilts by Elly Sienkiewicz is the latest in a long line of books by Elly based on teaching the reader how to create the appliqué blocks for a Baltimore style quilt. This book covers in very clear detail all of the techniques required to make the appliqué blocks and inspires you with the confidence that even the most difficult looking block is easy when made in small stages and following the instructions given. There are a number of new techniques (to me) included in the book using art materials and embellishments, for example creating silhouettes and stencil shading. The second half of the book is devoted to 25 patterns for blocks that the reader can reproduce to make their own unique quilt. The gallery of quilts are awe inspiring and many were included in the Special Exhibition `Baltimore's Daughters' at the International Quilt Festival in Houston in 2010. Many different quilt artists around the world contributed to the quilts, which were presented either to a quilt teacher or to Elly herself.

HASH(0xa7ee2708) out of 5 stars A Lot of Overlap with Baltimore Elegance March 8 2011

This book has a lot of good information on embellishing techniques and some nice block patterns. Unfortunately, many of the block patterns were previously published in Baltimore Elegance. I'm keeping the book, but I wish that had been clear when I purchased it.

HASH(0xa7ee2f0c) out of 5 stars Excellent book for Baltimore Albums and applique Nov. 18 2011

Format: Paperback
Elly Sienkiewicz created a excellent book on Baltimore Album Quilts and applique. The quilts are beautiful. She has included the blocks and layouts to be able to recreate many of the quilts in this book. However, what I like best about this book is her detailed applique and embellishment techniques, complete with many colored illustrations. Elly's other Baltimore Album books include applique instructions, but this book goes beyond those with instructions for painting and inking, silhouettes, weaving, 3-dimensional flowers and buds, ruching, and bead embroidery. Again, colored illustrations clarify all the detailed instructions. This attention to detail makes creating the blocks come alive and doable for the average quilter. The finished quilt goes up from just an average Album quilt to a stunning work of art. This is my favorite book by Elly Sienkiewicz on Baltimore Album quilts.

HASH(0xa7ee2f24) out of 5 stars A comprehensive book April 30 2012

Format: Paperback
Elly Sienkiewicz is one of the "quilting royalty" and has a reputation for being a wonderful teacher. I think this book is probably the next best thing to attending one of her classes. Elly gives you some of the history of Antebellum Album Quilts which she says "act as snapshots of their times". There is a gallery of stunning quilts in this book that will inspire you to want to make one I'm sure. But the best part to my mind is all the techniques Elly shows you from needleturn applique, to embellishment, embroidery stitches and more. All the instructions and patterns for making the quilt, Happiness is in the Journey, are also included. If you've ever thought about making a Baltimore stye quilt this book is a great place to start.
