4.0 out of 5 stars Needs to Calm Feb 21 2002

Overall the album is done very well, gaining strong support for the song Some People which is by far the strongest part of the album. The use of drone guitar riffs and solid lyrics help to make for a great album.

4.0 out of 5 stars a solid debut Aug 17 2001
Format:Audio CD
this album is just downright good from beginning to end. when the singing starts, it's almost like listening to chris hall (stabbing westward) the voice is really similar..but then he starts to scream and you might think you were listening to marilyn manson. then you mix the crisp note playing similar to staind's style and you just get a sweet sound. i'm not traditionally a fan of screaming...but this album really rocks. the music is high quality, better then just about any christian music for sure and easily able to compete with anything on trl. solid state has come out strong and proven that they're going to be the leading voice in hard edge music for a while to come, and albums like this just help to prove it.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Prophet's eye already been prophesied..." Mar 20 2001
Format:Audio CD
The mellowish intro to 3rd Root's debut album is just a bit deceptive, as what follows is a fierce offering of throbbing guitar and bass riffs matched with head-bobbing drum beats and a mix of hauntingly melodic vocals and wrenching screams. This is definitely a new era of heavy metal, and these guys have arrived with authority. Their sound can be compared to bands like the Deftones or even Stabbing Westward, but the message 3rd Root sends is what sets them apart and pales the comparison. They are by no means ashamed of their faith and go out of their way to share it with their audience. The sound is a kind of laid-back style of 'hardcore', but at certain moments explodes into small fits of devil-hating rage, especially in the all-Spanish track "Sangre", the hardest song on the CD. Other standouts on the album are the upbeat, driving "Wicked", the challenging "Prophet's Eye", and the melancholy "Torn". Overall, this is a great listen, and with 14 tracks you're certainly getting your money's worth. The only real drawback I noticed was that the beats from track to track are a little repetitive, but that should change as their sound evolves. I'm eagerly awaiting what's to come!
