This B movie with noble aspirations is the work of a gifted filmmaker whose storytelling falls short of his considerable stylistic flair. While addressing crises of faith in the framework of an alien-invasion thriller, M. Night Shyamalan (in his follow-up to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) favors atmospheric tension over explanatory plotting. He injects subtle humor into expertly spooky scenes, but the story suffers from too many lapses in logic. The film's faults are greatly compensated by the performance of Mel Gibson as a widower whose own crisis of faith coincides with the appearance of mysterious crop circles in his Pennsylvania cornfield... and hundreds of UFOs around the globe. With his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young children (Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin), the lapsed minister perceives this phenomenal occurrence as a series of signs and portents, while Shyamalan pursues a spookfest with War of the Worlds overtones. Disapointing and not scary

Quickly: disapointing, not that scary.
Summary: Priest loses wife, then loses faith and is left raising 2 kids with the help of his brother. Creepy things happen, it ends up it's aliens, they all hide, then fight one alien and learn that there reall is a god.
The Good: I actually liked the little girl, she was just creepy enough and not annoying. I thought Gibson did a great job playing the lost father. I loved the fact that this movie used The Hidden Fortress plot device. It told the story from the eyes of its lowest characters. A huge war is going on and instead of seeing the war we see 4 people watching the news about the War. The alien was rather cool once you got to it, I loved the camo effect.
The Bad: It just wasn't really that scary or clever. I expected way more from this (as I am pretty sure everyone else did when it came out). There was no plot twist at the end, that made me re-think the whole movie. There wasn't really even a 'jump' worthy cheap scare. It just didn't have what I expected in it.
The Ugly: Hidding in a boarded up house and then in a celler is the stuff of Zombie movies not Alien Invasion movies. The movie builds up so much suspense of the coming invasion, and we get to see people fumbling around in the dark and one alien.
Overall: this was pretty disapointing. Amusingly we owned this for a few years, and haven't watched it since most of our DVD watching starts during dinner. We didn't want to watch a horror while eating. Well we could have watched this one. It's just not scary. Not being scary I at least expected some big revalation at the end that made you think, a "What he was a Ghost?!?" moment. Technically there was one, but it just didn't work for me.

"Signs" is,undobtedly, one of the most misunderstood films in recent memory. It is also one of the most brilliantly conceived and executed films in many a year. The heart of the movie lies NOT with the outward ET invasion, but with the father's inward crisis of faith.
The film asks the the timeless and difficult question that philosophers and theologians have asked for centuries. Is the world is just a hodgepodge of chance and coincidence, and therefore, meaningless, or is the universe guided by some metaphysical force, implying a purpose to everything that happens. Are we on our own, at the mercy of a cruel and unjust universe, or is there someone looking out for our welfare?
The director uses the alien theme to create a suspeneseful scenario ala Hitchcock, but infuses it with a profound, underlying structure ala Ingmar Bergman. He also throws in mystical elements such as the healing and life giving power of water ala director Tom Tykwer (of "The Princess and the Warrior" fame). The many layers produce a complex and thought-provoking film that should not be missed.
M. Night Shyamalan's best film by far

"Signs" is M. Night Shyamalan's best movie, and one of my favorite suspense films. It is also so ridiculously underrated! Many people hate it because of its religious aspects, its ending, and it wasn't what they had expected. Come on people! This film isn't about big explosions or special effects. It's about characters that you come to know and care about. That is what makes it a great movie. Great movies are about characters, NOT special effects. Anyway, what I love about this film is the humor that comes from the supporting characters, and it has a sweet and beautiful little girl in it. Abigail Breslin, as Bo Hess, is the kind of little girl you'd love to have as your own. She's so adorable and hilarious, and she pulled my heartstrings at the right moments. I hope she makes more films in the future.

Good but not as good as the Alien films. Needed more.
