5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Addition to Their Discography, Sep 16 2006

This review is from: Silence Of Another Kind (Audio CD)
Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with Paatos' previous album, "Kallocain." It was just missing that certain something that lured me into this band that I found on "Timeloss," and sounded a little more commercialized and "poppy." "Timeloss" had that unique, magnetic, hauntingly beautiful, nostalgic feeling. "Nostalgic" is always a weird word to describe brand new music, but seriously, when I first heard "Téa," for instance, I was convinced it was recorded in the 1970's (Even though I was never alive in the 1970's... but that's beside the point).

Well somehow, they got that old sound right back on this album and have explored and expanded upon it better than I could have ever imagined. This album is so polished and crisp. There is a vast spectrum of emotions from very gloomy and eerie, to tranquil and keyboard-heavy, and to much more upbeat and joyful. It consists of many sweet guitar melodies, lots of keyboards, bass, cello, viola, violin, and a little saxophone. Not to mention Petronella Nettermalm's voice is astonishing and ultimately soothing, weather she is delivering more powerful style vocals or not. Also, many of the band members do backing vocals.

"Is That All?" is probably my favorite piece, beginning with the most heartfelt and serene guitar melody, introducing a heavier, distorted guitar chorus, and beautifully intertwining the two styles. As the song progresses, Petronella starts to cry "Is That All?" in the most emotively gorgeous melody, more and more powerful each time, as the music parallels her, getting louder and the drumming getting crazier towards the end.

"There Will be no Miracles" is a much more upbeat rock song. It's simple and catchy but it works well here, especially between songs with a drastically different feel.

Fans of White Willow, particularly their newer work, should adore this, as should fans of Landberk, King Crimson, Anekdoten, and Anglagard. Paatos is a young, ambitious young band with a lot to look forward to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful, Aug 23 2007
By Kurt Harding "bon vivant" - Published on Amazon.com

My introduction to Paatos came when I picked up the special edition of Kallocain on the recommendation of a fellow music fanatic. I liked that well enough so when I saw Silence of Another Kind in the bins at a favorite Encinitas record store I didn't hesitate to buy it.
This is a hauntingly beautiful piece of work. There is a special quality about the voice of singer Petronella Nettermalm that just electrifies the listener. The more I listen, the more I want to listen repeatedly. Not only is the voice spellbinding, the music itself imbues the listener with feelings of an almost narcotic bliss. The industry blurb says the band calls their music "melancholic post-rock". Pay close attention to the lyrics as you listen and you will find that to be a fairly apt description of Paatos' music.
I like the entire CD, but my favorites are the raging Shame, the eerie Falling, the doleful Is That All?, and the plaintive Not A Sound, which I consider to be the best song on the album. There Will Be No Miracles is a decent song as well but has the slightest whiff of a "commercial" sound about it.
With the issue of Silence Of Another Kind, it is clear that InsideOut Music has stabled yet another winner with Paatos. The music press says that the band is soon to issue a DVD. You can bet I'll get that and anything else they issue.
If you have not yet heard Paatos, you are in for a treat with this. Petronella Nettermalm and her band are hopefully bound for greatness.
Listen and hear what I mean.

2.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming prettiness, Jan 27 2009

2 1/2

The kind of overall quality that relatively exists though leaves much satisfaction to be desired, this is an attempt to take something like The Cranberries alternative rock and mold it with a harder edge, but there just is not much talent here to bring out any oomph inside near-boring compositions.
