Product Description

From Amazon.com

Styled more along the lines of a revolutionary cell than a band, Bloc Party approach the medium of rock'n'roll with the sort of high seriousness usually reserved for philosophy lectures. Yet on Silent Alarm, this "autonomous unit" of smart, wiry London youth don't just succeed in reinvigorating the artform--they come pretty close to reinventing it from the ground up. Whereas early singles like "She's Hearing Voices" found the band still attempting to chisel their own image out of familiar post-punk reference points--The Fall, Joy Division, and Gang Of Four, to name but three--newer tracks such as "Like Eating Glass" and the prickly "Price Of Gas" find Bloc Party pioneering a freshly-minted template of staccato percussion, expansive soundscapes, and cryptic lyrics that artfully straddle the political and the personal. Russell Lissack has forsaken that overdone hallmark of post-punk, brittle tortured-fretboard skronk, in favor of an effects-laden guitar sound that adds genuine prettiness to Bloc Party's edgy rush. But it's Kele Okereke's vocal that's the band's most flexible facet, morphing from frothing anger to breathless desperation. "Are you hoping for a miracle?" he bays, on "Helicopter". Yes? Well Silent Alarm ably fits the bill. --Louis Pattison

4.0 out of 5 stars All out emotion, April 20 2005

This review is from: Silent Alarm (Audio CD)
Although the bands are completely different, when I hear Kele belting out some lyrics, I have images of Murray Lightburn of The Dears, which is a good thing. There is an unavoidable urgency in Bloc Party's music that draws you into each song, making you care a little more than you probably should.

As far as musicianship goes, there is some really good work on bass, but everything is held together by probably some of the better drum work you're going to hear from most bands these days. Every beat is perfect, something which now seems almost forgotten.

A solid cd, although true, it does run a bit long, maybe it could have been chopped down to about 11 tracks. If that's the worst I can say about an album, that's pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing CD, Dec 15 2005

This review is from: Silent Alarm (Audio CD)
This band got me into liking indie music i was never really big into it before but now i have finally realized what ive been missing. I had this cd along time ago but i decided to write a review for it because they are one of my favorite bands. The drum work on this cd is amazing it sounds simple yet awsome tempo and pitch for every beat truely amazing work and im a drummer and its hard to keep up with the cd. the bass work is also another high point to the cd but what really stands out is the vocals and guitars truley amazing. This is one of the best cd's of the last couple years and can easily be lsitend to over and over. I highly recommend this cd and i can't wait for the next one!!!!

Building on the success of their early singles and EP, the UK's Bloc Party draw from the darker end of their homeland's 1980s indie pop canon to create a powerful debut LP. The silly bandname may bely their sober and resolute sound, but it's of little consequence in the shadow of this record's charismatic sophistication and outstanding songwriting that emphasizes substance-over-style, contrasting with their peers in Interpol and Franz Ferdinand.
