Product Description

From Amazon

Silverwing, the first book in Kenneth Oppel's Silverwing trilogy, swept up award after award in the year after its publication, including the prestigious Mr. Christie's Book Award, the Ontario Library Association's Silver Birch Award, and the Canadian Library Association's Book of the Year for Children. Shade is a young bat, the runt of his Silverwing colony. When he dares his rival, Chinook, to take a peek at the sun, forbidden to bats since the Great Battle of the Birds and the Beasts, he sets in motion a series of events that will have huge repercussions. First the owls burn the Silverwing nursery, Tree Haven, forcing the colony to set out early for their winter roost at Hibernaculum, millions of wingbeats away. Then Shade is swept out to sea during a huge storm and separated from his family and friends, and has to try to find his own way south. And to make matters worse, he meets a deadly enemy: Goth, prince royal of the Vampyrum Spectrum bats, who poses an immense danger to the future of the colony. Oppel's fast-paced narrative is sure to capture the imagination of young readers, and he has been attentive to his natural history, too--since bats can only see shades of black and white, his book includes no references to colour. But colour or no colour, Silverwing is a totally thrilling read, a fantasy adventure that young readers will turn to again and again. From Publishers Weekly

PW compared this "gripping" epic starring a bat to Watership Down for the author's use of animal characters in his investigation of tolerance, intellectual freedom and other social concerns. Ages 8-12. (May)

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Tale of Courage and Perseverance, Oct 13 2007

Shade, the Silverwing Bat, has three strikes against him. One, he's smaller than other bats his age; two, he has no father, and, three, his overpowering curiosity to see the sun results in the destruction of his colony's home. During their migration, a fierce storm forces Shade far off course from his mother and their colony. He lands on an island, where he meets a young Brightwing bat named Marina who's been ostracized by her colony for wearing a ban placed on her by humans. Together, Marine and Shade experience adventure and danger on their quest to find Shade's colony.

Kenneth Oppel's fantasy novel, SILVERWING, is a heartwarming tale of courage, perseverance, being different, and struggling to answer some pretty deep questions about how the world works, and how one survives all types of obstacles.

My son read this book with his sixth grade class, and liked it enough to want to read the book again a year later. The narrative descriptions are vivid, and many young readers will relate to the range of emotions a young bat experiences in his struggle to survive in a confusing and frightening world.

When I first read this book 10 years ago it blew me away. I was in university at the time, and doing a children's lit course, and read a number of award winners to supplement the 15 or so books we read for the course. This book was one I picked up that summer and I have been a huge fan of Kenneth Oppel ever since. This story is a coming-of-age story; it is the story of Shade a young silverwing bat who is the runt in his colony. During the annual migration to the colony's winter roost, he is separated from his friends and family. Shade sets out to find his colony and alone and desperate he braves the outside world. As winter approaches he must find his colony or a safe haven quickly, or else he will perish.

This book is very well written, told in the black and white world of a bat and echo vision. The story is fascinating and the adventure runs non-stop. The first time I read this I could not put it down. This time through I took it a little slower and really savoured the book. It won 11 literary awards and has numerous sequels now. Pick it up for an excellent read.
