In 1978, bass-baritone, Simon Estes became the very first African-American male to perform a leading role at Bayreuth, in this case Der fliegende Hollander. During the 60's through the 80's, Estes electrified audiences with his commanding technique and formidable stature, most especially with his high charged performances of Wagner. His personal story is a compelling one as is so aptly detailed in the informative liner notes. One is struck by the consistent high level of artistry present throughout this Philips derived program. Orchestra, conductor et al, provide capable support. Sonics are spacious and detailed. This disc is a vivid document of an important singer at the top of his game.
