Product Description

Review

"This book is a wonderful way to get started in Java for those who learn best by doing; you don't just read about language constructs, you build real modern computer applications that demonstrate them as you follow the step-by-step tutorials." — Paul Mclachian, Compuware Corporation

"A great choice for business computing students-lots of sample programs and programming problems. Swing applications are integrated from the beginning and the book focuses on problem-solving logic." — Merrill Parker, Ph.D, Information Systems Technology, Chattanooga State

"What especially impresses me about this text is the absolutely wonderful set of exercises that the authors have included to motivate students to learn programming. I'm really looking forward to using this text in the classroom." — Ed Weihrauch, Community College of Allegheny County

"The seamless integration of UML, object-oriented programming and design, and GUI concepts make this text an excellent choice for introductory programmers looking for a springboard into advanced technologies." — Gavin T. Osborne, Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology

"A terrific book appropriate for any Java IDE-it doesn't flinch at the challenging concepts behind object-oriented programming in Java, yet it takes students through step by step in a straightforward, readable style." — Catherine Wyman, Senior Professor, DeVry University

"A student who had missed my classes on arrays was having a hard time, so she borrowed Tutorial 8 as I was reviewing your draft manuscript. She came back and said she understood arrays. She is very excited about the book." — Craig W. Slinkman, Ph.d, University of Texas, Arlington

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to learn a huge language quickly, Oct 20 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Simply Java Programming: An Application-Driven™ Tutorial Approach (Paperback)
This is going to be a pretty short review, but I just want to say I'm a pretty big fan of Deitel books, I owned 2 before this one (C++ How to Program and Java How to Program). I definately spent *way* more time with my C++ book, and therefore would call myself a C++ programmer. I wanted to learn Java quickly, but without wading through another How to Program style book. This Simply Java book is perfect for where I'm at. I just wanted to see working code in action, and I could figure out myself how it differs from C++. I should point out that you just "add" functionality into code thats already written for you (you add about 10%) but after a 4-8 chapters you really start getting a strong feel for Java. I just finished Ch.8 and have done none of the exercises/challenges at the end of the chapters and if I really felt like it I could construct my own simple GUI app in Java no problem. I've never seen a book of this style but I got really turned onto it, and I'm tempted to even pick up the C++ version of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic computer programming book, April 11 2004
This review is from: Simply Java Programming: An Application-Driven™ Tutorial Approach (Paperback)
As a compulsive computer programming autodidact, I rate *Simply Java* the best computer language book I have ever read. Java is a hard language to learn. Most books get you bogged down in abstract exercises. *Simply Java* gets you writing practical GUI applications almost immediately. It's worth every penny. I'm going to stop writing this review right now and study another chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, Feb 17 2004

This review is from: Simply Java Programming: An Application-Driven™ Tutorial Approach (Paperback)
I'm an experienced C++ programmer with access to JBuilder version 5. I did most of the examples and learned Java along the way. I was able to contruct simple GUI tools for my job as a software engineer based on the examples from the book.

The inside is beautifully layed out in color. It's one of the reasons the book is expensive.

I am having trouble getting the database examples(ATM&Bookstore) to work. So close to perfection as a learning tool. I imagine there would be more frustration if I did not know how to debug from an IDE. Subtract one star if you are not an experienced programmer with a proper IDE.
