5.0 out of 5 stars An easy and fun way to learn Visual Basic 2008 Sept. 16 2008
By Chee Lim Cheung - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is one of the easiest and most helpful book for anyone to learn Visual Basic 2008. It is tutorial driven with complete working code supplied on the CD packaged with the book. The IDE controls and Visual Basic structures are introduced gradually in a piecemeal and painless fashion so that the reader is not overwhelmed by a flood of new concepts and programming structures. The reader test-drives a small application at the beginning of each chapter and then builds up the application with helpful, easy-to-follow steps. You are very unlikely to find any easier book than this one for Visual Basic 2008. Once you have gone through this beginners' book, you might like to round out your mastery of Visual Basic 2008 with its more complete cousin Visual Basic 2008: How To Program. Both books are strongly recommended for anyone learning Visual Basic 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great high level overview of Visual Basic 2008 Oct. 28 2008
By Techie Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am an experienced Visual Basic .Net programmer, and I purchased this book to review the new features in Visual Basic .NET 2008.

The book provided a great overview of new technologies such as LINQ, WPF/ XAML, and Silverlight. The book provides 32 examples with very detailed line-by line explanations that are valuable for learning.

After reading the book, I wish I had purchased Deitel's other Visual Basic 2008 because I would like more detail some Visual Basic 2008 features. I would HIGHLY recommend this book for someone who wants to get their feet wet and quickly write VB programs. For more explanation and fundamentals, I would recommend Deitel's other Visual Basic 2008 book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good beginner book June 27 2009
By A. Sylva - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I think it is a great book if you are new to programming or Visual Basic. I have taken a class using VB so I skipped by the first couple chapters which dealt with setting things up and the IDE although there were a few useful tips that I founds while skimming through. I would defintely recommend this books to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn programming, this is the best book I've seen. Aug. 14 2009
By P. Gibson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've always wanted to learn programming and have looked at a myriad of books. I was always told the best languages to learn from are scripting languages like Python and Ruby. I checked out books on those scripting languages and was put to sleep. They usually spend a few chapters explaining object oriented programing, high level languages, and the importance of open source code. Then they jump into a boring "hello world" program and thought you'd be excited about it. Usually from there, the books jump off into more complicated topics and quickly goes over your head, or you just lose interest regurgitating code for worthless programs.

This Deitel book is totally different. It comes with a copy of Microsoft Visual Basic Express edition, so there's nothing to buy, and there's no license or expiration period. The software is good forever, no 180 day trial.

Many of us get excited about learning something when we can see the results produce something we are familiar with - we're highly visual creatures. Well, the Deitel book starts you off creating GUIs, with buttons, text boxes and labels right away. Of course, the GUIs don't do anything, but it gets you excited about something you're familiar with as a computer user. After you set up GUIs, then they take you through step by step adding the code to make the event driven applications actually do something.

Basically, every chapter introduces a new concept, then walks you through tutorials, and at the end of the chapter, there's exercises (where you're on your own) that re-enforce the concepts you learned that chapter.

Don't bother with other programming books, these are the best I've seen.
