4.0 out of 5 stars Loved layout, but quality control questionable. June 28 2013
Format:Imitation Leather|Verified Purchase
I really liked the Bible layout inside and font, but there was a major manufacturer's defect that led me to return it. 4" of the loose end of the ribbon had been laminated into the back cover and somehow this got by quality control. Very easy return process, hence, will give 4 stars. Without this defect, may have been a 5 star. Re-ordered with a different cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESV Single Column Legacy Black Leather July 18 2012
Format:Leather Bound|Verified Purchase
Other's have noted that this bible doesn't have some of the fine touches of a Cambridge or Allan Bible but for the price this is a fine bible. The picture does not do the leather justice. It looks thin, plasticy and cheap but I was very impressed when I saw and touched the leather. It seems to have a matte finish and the leather feels quite thick. Some might say stiff but I am sure in time it will soften up. The binding lies open flat with slight resistance. This is easily broken in.

The thing I love about this bible is the single column setting and the section headings off to the side. It is not really a wide margin bible but arguably close. The thing I love is being able to read the text in an uninterupted fashion. With it's generous font and clean page design I can read this bible all day. The abundance of white space on the page doesn't make my eyes tired. It is not a study bible with lots of notes but this is what I love about it just elegantly presented text. It is not a red letter edition which many people seem to like but I prefer black text anyways.

I was reluctant to get the ESV translation and would have preferred the NRSV. After reading the ESV translation for a while it is very close to the old RSV and not far off the NRSV. For those KJV only folks consider giving this a try. You will wish the KJV was set in such a lovely setting. Many of those incomprehensible passage of the Old Testament or some Pauline Epistles are much easier to comprehend in this modern translation.

This is a bible for readers and it is a pleasure to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Readable ESV Bible, Worth the Purchase Jan. 9 2012
By Kenton Rhodes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Imitation Leather|Verified Purchase
While it's not perfect, it may be the most readable Bible Crossway has produced.

The vast majority of single column Bibles use a very small font which makes the lines too long, and the leading (space between lines of text) is not adjusted to make it readable. You end up with long lines of tiny text and virtually no space between lines. That's anti-readability.

Crossway did not make those mistakes.

They use a 9 pt font. I wouldn't mind seeing it a point size bigger, but 9 pt isn't so small that it's uncomfortable.

They got the line length right using ~13 words per line. And there is enough leading to properly track the text from the end of one line to the beginning of another.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is virtually no bleed-through of text from pages beneath the one you are reading. It's one of the best non-bleed-through texts I've seen.

They use black text throughout (no words of Christ in red). That enhances readability tremendously. Red text on white paper is not ideal and can strain your eyes when read for long periods. For those who have a theological problem with not using red text, please remember that it is a very modern invention. Red text wasn't used in Bibles until the late 1800s. No Bible before that time had red text and that includes the original King James.

The TrueTone cover is very flexible and can be folded back easily.

The pages have wide outside margins where they put the section headings. The margins are wide enough to make them ideal for notes.

That brings me to a minor complaint. The inside margins are a little too narrow. The text runs slightly into the curved area of the page where it inserts into the spine. It's not bad--I've seen much worse. But it is a little annoying.

If they upped the point size a bit and widened the inside margin, this may be the perfect Bible. In any case, it is definitely worth the purchase as it is now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Single Column ESV on the Market May 11 2012
By Darin Cue - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Leather Bound
I wanted to share my thoughts about the Top Grain Leather ESV Single Column Legacy Bible, organized in 5 areas:

1. Translation (5 stars) - I'm a big ESV (English Standard Version) fan. Although I own several translations, the ESV is the translation I find myself reading the most. It is a very readable, word-for-word translation. This Bible contains the 2011 ESV text.
2. Cover and Binding (4 stars) - The brown cowhide leather is thin, but nice. It is, however, somewhat stiff. I'm sure it will loosen up over time. The raised bands on the spine exude old world quality.
3. Paper Quality (5 stars) - The paper quality is the best of any current ESV Bible. I own a Cambridge Wide Margin ESV, too, and the paper in the Legacy, I believe, is even better the Cambridge WM. This is high praise indeed.
4. Print Quality (5 stars) - The Bible is printed in Italy and the print quality is truly excellent. The font is 9 pt., which for me is at the low end of what I would want, especially in a single column Bible. However, the print is consistent throughout. The spacing between lines is great. Also, this Bible use line matching (print on one side of the page lines up exactly with the print on the other side of the page) and executes it flawlessly. This is also a black letter version which I prefer much more than red letter versions.
5. Features (5 stars) - No references, and yes, it is a feature. This is a great reader's edition. In addition to no references in the text, the column headers have been moved to the outer margins. And speaking of margins, they are large. Another feature I really like is that the verse number is pushed to the left of the text in the poetry sections. In my opinion, it's the best poetry representation I have seen in any Bible.

All in all, I give this Bible 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the ESV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Single Column Legacy Bible Jan. 10 2012
By Michael L. Sheppard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Imitation Leather|Verified Purchase
Having recently received and begun using the single-column legacy bible, I can say that of the many ESV bibles I have purchased and used, this edition is the best yet. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the various features of this bible as follows:

* the Tru-tone cover (amazing look and feel of goatskin leather) - 10

* yapp (cover overhang - semi-yapp which doesn't catch the paper or get in the way) - 10

* binding method (sewn signatures) - 10

* edge treatment (gold foil applied lightly and tastefully; almost no flaking or page sticking) - 10

* ribbons (1, brown, standard) - 9

* page layout (sin col, wide mar; this layout is just perfect giving text/poetry room to "breath") - 10

* font type style (beautiful font that is easy to read for long periods) - 10

* font size (not too small, nor to large to keep the bible a reasonable size) - 10

* font density (darkness of type) and uniformity across pages (best printing I have ever seen) - 10

* paper (I have a $200 bible, but this edition has the best paper I have ever seen; smooth, ivory color) - 10

* bible size (overall size of bible feels right - 6"x9"x1.5", not overly floppy yet sufficiently large to use - 10

* OVERALL - 10

The overall bible is beautiful. the Tru-Tone cover is the best I have seen and rivals the look and feel of $200 goatskin bibles (I have one). The text block and layout is the best I've every used - poetry and prose flow naturally across the page and sentences/phrases are not cramped/disconnected as in double-column bibles. The paper is the finest I've touched and is ivory in color, smooth, with minimal ghosting (text on other side of page visible through page). Printing density of text from page to page across entire bible is beautifully consistent. The wide margins allow ample space for making notes (I highly recommend a Pigma Micron #005 technical pen for notes).

This is the finest ESV bible I have ever used at any price. Well done, Crossway!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Constructed Bible Feb. 8 2012
By Duct Tape 2007 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Imitation Leather
This bible is very well constructed. One thing that is immediately evident is that the paper is a much higher quality and with less bleed through than over editions of the ESV. With the high quality paper, there is virtually no issues with wrinkling of pages. The single column layout is very readable. I agree with the previous review...it would have been better with a slightly larger font, but other than that, I have no other issues. The font is not "small" by any means. The passage headings on the side of the text is an interesting innovation. I am a note taker who likes to write in his bible, and that was the main motivation for me in this purchase. The margins are very wide, both the outer margins and the margins on the bottom, which are huge. Great for note taking. Finally a high quality bible with wide margins.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stunning... but quality problems Nov. 20 2012
By Rachel H. Nguyen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Leather Bound|Verified Purchase
This is an absolutely lovely book. The cover is beautiful top grain leather. The color is a rich brown. The page layout is very readable, with plenty of room in the margins to jot notes or cross references. The typeface is very clear, too... and because the pages are so perfectly lined up, there is no ghosting from the other side of the paper. That means that the paper can be relatively thin, but still look and feel great. This bible is a nice size, too, neither too large or too small.

This is my second 'big purchase' bible. The first one was a Cambridge wide margin NRSV with a bonded leather cover. The typeface on that bible is minuscule, about 7.5 points. This bible has much larger type. At 9.5 it is far easier to read. I also love the single column format. It is much nicer for reading. My Cambridge is 2 column and I don't like that as much.

About the translation: I have been using ESV for a couple of years now and find it very readable. I like that it is a literal word for word translation.

There are a few things I would change if I were the bible designer. I would appreciate a little space between paragraphs. In this edition, new chapters are started with a slight indentation rather than a blank line. I also would add a third ribbon. It would make following a 3 part reading plan a little easier.

All in all, though, this is a beautifully crafted bible. I am thrilled and expect to love it for years to come.

EDITED TO UPDATE: Sadly, after a few weeks, the bible started to have a quality problem. The inner cover liner began to separate from the leather. At first it was just in a corner, but after awhile, it started to spread to the whole bottom of the inside front cover. Crossways was gracious enough to send out a replacement, but that, too, had quality issues. The headliner at the top wasn't glued properly and was pulling apart where the ribbons where attached. Again, Crossways offered to replace it. They sent me a prepaid label for Fedex. I boxed it up and dropped it in a Fedex box. It has been over a month and I have not gotten the replacement. Fedex has no way to track it and Crossways doesn't seem to know if the book has arrived or not. Will update with a resolution. Bottom line is that this gorgeous bible has some kinks to work out. Really a shame given how beautiful it is. I LOVED reading it.

Hoping the new one gets here eventually and is problem free. I initially gave this bible 5 stars but have had to update the rating because of the manufacturing issues.

FINAL UPDATE: After over a month waiting for a replacement copy to arrive, it finally did and was also defective. This time the headliner at the top of the spine was short and did not cover the entire spine. I emailed Crossways back and received a message from them that since the headliner is just 'cosmetic' they would not send out another replacement. Frankly, for the amount I spent on this book, I am disappointed with the manufacturing quality issues. My Cambridge bible had no problems at all. I think in the future, I am going to stick with them.
