Have the diplomatic efforts of the Obama administration toward Iran failed? Was the Bush administration's emphasis on military intervention, refusal to negotiate, and pursuit of regime change a better approach? How can the United States best address the ongoing turmoil in Tehran? This book provides a definitive and comprehensive analysis of the Obama administration's early diplomatic outreach to Iran and discusses the best way to move toward more positive relations between the two discordant states.
Trita Parsi, a Middle East foreign policy expert with extensive Capitol Hill and United Nations experience, interviewed 70 high-ranking officials from the U.S., Iran, Europe, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Brazil—including the top American and Iranian negotiators—for this book. Parsi uncovers the previously unknown story of American and Iranian negotiations during Obama's early years as president, the calculations behind the two nations' dealings, and the real reasons for their current stalemate. Contrary to prevailing opinion, Parsi contends that diplomacy has not been fully tried. For various reasons, Obama's diplomacy ended up being a single roll of the dice. It had to work either immediately—or not at all. Persistence and perseverance are keys to any negotiation. Neither Iran nor the U.S. had them in 2009.

Ready for another Mideast war?,

This review is from: A Single Roll of the Dice: Obama's Diplomacy with Iran (Hardcover)
The Amazon.com review of this book by M.J. Rosenberg, Senior Foreign Policy Fellow at Media Matters Action Network, persuaded me to download the Kindle version. M.J. believes that "this book can help prevent an unnecessary and catastrophic war that could lead to many dead, an Iranian rush to develop nuclear bombs, attacks on our troops in the Middle East, thousands of Hizbullah missiles devastating Israel, and the end of any chance for economic recovery (oil prices would skyrocket)" (see his review below).I'm not as optimistic as M.J., but if you want to understand Iranian paranoia, Israeli treachery, and American duplicity -- and plenty of stupidity to go around -- you must read this excellent book. Trita Parsi's clear and sane voice rises above all the ill-informed rhetoric and self-serving propaganda, which will almost certainly lead to Washington's next Middle Eastern military fiasco -- which will probably drive the final nail in the coffin of U.S. hegemony. In less than 4 years, Obama has gone from promising to heal the rift between the U.S. and Muslims of the greater Middle East to imposing on Iran "crippling sanctions" which, if they don't work -- and they aren't -- leaves him no option but to start bombing. To give him his due, it must be said that he never stood a chance. Just as with the economic crisis, where he appointed to his administration all the guys who caused the crisis in the first place, he surrounded himself with people who opposed his plans for diplomacy and/or are strongly aligned with Israel's belligerence vis-à-vis Iran (not to mention vis-à-vis Palestine). Consequently, his admirable plans were doomed from the beginning. Parsi's book was published in January -- before this latest episode in which Netanyahu has got Obama backed into a corner. Having pledged unconditional support for Israel's security, Obama has no choice but to join Israel if Netanyahu starts the war by attacking Iran before the November elections in the U.S. For should Obama back away from that pledge, the Israel lobby will call upon its vast sources of wealth and media access to damage Obama's re-election chances. But I digress. Anyone who just can't seem to get a handle on this interminable conflict between the U.S. and the greater Middle East should read this book. You won't regret it.

A key to unlock the present US-Iran-Israel crisis,
By Z. Ahari - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Single Roll of the Dice: Obama's Diplomacy with Iran (Hardcover)
This is a well- researched well- documented work. Mr. Trita Parsi is a respected Iranian-American scholar whose previous work, "The Unholy Alliance" is a classic work on relations between the US, Iran and Israel. His intimate knowledge of Persian language, affords him a unique ability to navigate the tortuous course of statements and comments made by the Iranian politicians and diplomats. He has interviewed a large number of influential in-office and out-of-office politicians, diplomats and technocrats of all stripes. He is one of the few Iranians who are engaged in the task of trying to bring about a resolution to the festering relationship between the US and Iran. And like almost all of them he is subject to the attacks of the individuals, groups and states that each has an agenda of its own. The attacks are vicious and concerted. A review of the negative comments and the uniformity of their language is a good indication of the organized form of these attacks. The book is a valuable source of information on this convoluted and dangerous path. It should be a mandatory reading on all sides of the conflict before the verbal conflict turns into an event of diabolical dimensions. It is a handbook written for those who are seeking a peaceful solution to this problem. Let us keep in mind that if we do not heed the wise and achievable recommendations made by the author, the world would be thrown into a predictably disastrous, unfathomable abyss more treacherous than the last century's conflicts combined

Ok, everyone that rated this book one star, did not read it. They have a political agenda and are using this forum for book reviews as a mouth piece! Shame! If you want a comprehensive analysis about this issue, just like the Israel and Iran issue in his other book, here you will find it. It opens your eyes to what has happened and how things happened. It is so eye opening, it is inspiring! You will feel like you have been freed and and can see one of the most pressing and most important issues, so much more clearly. The perfect book for the train, before bed, as a weekend read. Toss out the newspaper, here is the real news.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of not just what the Obama administration's Iran policy has been but also all the different elements and pressures that have influenced Iran policy to date. This book, while perhaps not as good as his previous book Treacherous Alliance, which is pone of the best Middle East foreign policy books I have ever read, is well written and is filled with a healthy dose of anecdotes and conversations with key policy makers involved in US-Iran relations. As such, the book is more than just one man's take on US policy -- it is an account of what the critical decision makers believe and how their perceptions steered policy in the direction it has gone. Overall this book is both entertaining and informative a must read for anyone trying to getting a better handle on US-Iran relations. And on a side note, do be deterred by the people giving the book one star ratings and calling him an agent of the Iran regime. Dr. Parsi is well known for having taken on the MEK terrorist/cult group and fighting to keep them on the State department's terrorist list, a campaign which has gained him the ire of many of their fanatical supporters who take every opportunity to slander Dr. Parsi's good name. |
