Pulsing with ideas, energy and inspiration, Sketchbook Confidential offers a rare peek inside the personal sketchbooks of 40+ master artists. From colorful painted sketches to spontaneous napkin doodles, from the intensely personal to the purely whimsical, most of the work here was produced quickly and never intended for public view. It is honest and immediate, fresh and fearless.
In their own words, the artists share the intentions and inspirations behind their sketching. For some, it is a cherished, everyday habit - a way of wandering through the ideas in their mind, playing around with new subjects, or just having some anything-goes kind of fun. For others, sketching is a deliberate tool for problem-solving - working through a composition, capturing a moment's light or test-driving a color scheme.
As you turn the pages you'll be immersed in the creative processes of these individuals, arriving on the other side with a feeling of kinship and a renewed desire to boldly capture life in your own sketchbooks!

This review is from: Sketchbook Confidential: Secrets from the private sketches of over 40 master artists (Paperback)
Sketchbook Confidential is a collection of sketchbooks from 41 renowned artists. You can feel their inspiration and excitement for art through their art and commentary. There are sketches on abstract imagery, figure drawings, landscapes, and many more, whether imaginary or sketched plein-air. Some are quite colourfully painted I don't know if they should be called sketches. It's not all pencils and ink. Each artist only has a brief 4 pages of coverage. Good thing is you can get to sample lots of different work, and artists' websites are included. It's a nice inspiring read. The list of artists included are: * Robert T. Barrett * Dan Beck * William Berra * Roberto (Bob) Cardinale * Erin Currier * George Allen Durkee * Douglas Fryer * Tammy Garcia * Albert Handell * William Hook * Cathy Johnson * Nancy Kozikowski * Geoffrey Laurence * Stephanie Pui-Mun Law * Bev Lee * Linda Leslie * Chuck Lukacs * Jennifer McChristian * Richard McKinley * Jeff Mellem * Ed Morgan * Art Mortimer * Claudia Nice * P.A. Nisbet * Margy O'Brien * William O'Connor * Joe Paquet * Jean Pederson * John Potter * Tony Pro * Alan Paine Radebaugh * Chuck Sabatino * Mark Spencer * Kate Starling * Aleksander Titovets * Lyuba Titovets * Joshua Tobey * Elan Varshay * Frederico Vigil * Mark White * Mark Willenbrink If you're interested in sketchbooks, also check out An Illustrated Life: Drawing Inspiration from the Private Sketchbooks of Artists, Illustrators and Designers. Suitable for Classroom Use,

This review is from: Sketchbook Confidential: Secrets from the private sketches of over 40 master artists (Paperback)
I hope my review doesn't sink this book; because I teach art lessons I tend to look at books for their usefulness and suitability in teaching art to children. This book contains a great sampling of a huge variety of professional artists' work from their sketchbooks. All types of artwork are represented, even sculpture. My favorite part about this book is that I can hand it to my nine- and twelve-year-old students and let them look at it. There are no traditional nudes (there are a few guys without shirts [arms crossed over their chests or back view], a sketch of a distant statute, and a female bust who may not be clad, but nothing explicit). There is no overtly offensive or scary material in here. While it is not designed for children, young people can benefit from and be inspired by the many styles and variety of subject matter of the different artists. I think this book will encourage young people to draw, draw, draw. Each artist's entry is four pages and features a brief bio, brief comments by the artist on their style of work or use of materials or feelings about their work--that sort of thing. The main part of each of those four pages is covered by samples from the artist's sketchbooks. These aren't step-by-step instructions, though you can sometimes see how an artist progressed through a piece. There are no projects to complete. It's a book to inspire and inform. Subject matter includes figures, portraits, scenery, architecture, animals, abstracts, still life, weaving, jewelry design, and dragons; emphasis is on people and landscapes. All the usual types of media are represented. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful

It is a collector's book for sure. As some reviews already mentioned, it has a very good collection of sketches, but not really sure if it they were private. Surprisingly, it also has some brief thoughts from the artists which is a good read in itself. There are some awesome impressionist/realist art works along with some great sketch works.
