Product Description

Here's Dave Grohl as you've seldom seen him before: not just live, but as the title Skin And Bones may hint, stripped down to his acoustic core. Well actually, not quite. Rather than just Grohl and a six-string, this collection--recorded at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles--harks back to the ensemble feel of Nirvana's 1994 album Unplugged in New York, familiar songs rebuilt by the Foos and a cast of musicians including violinist Petra Haden, keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and even a member of that now legendary Nirvana session, Pat Smear. Stripped of the anthemic breeziness and solid, muscular riffing that have become Foo trademarks, Skin and Bones relies more on prettifying the arrangements with strings, shakers, and slow splashes of cymbal, and occasionally uncovering new levels of pathos beneath the sweat and grit. "Walking After You" feels custom-written for this format, while the crescendos of "My Hero" gain a little more humanity in this more intimate setting. And when the bigger hits come, Grohl makes up for the absence of feedback and fireworks with sheer frontman charisma, summoning up some throaty Springsteen emotiveness on "Best of You" and climaxing with a heroic "Everlong." --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great accoustic concert!! Jan. 5 2007
I am so glad they decided to release this on DVD... having gone to the show in Vancouver, and witnessing one of the best concerts i've ever seen, I was very curious to see what other tunes they played on the tour.

The DVD has a cool little intro shot half backstage and half on a creek in LA (I believe) with all 8 band members in canoes playing their instruments... very different!

The show opens with Dave playing 'Razor' solo for the most part, followed by several new & old songs. One highlight being 'On The Mend', the guitar solo at the end is amazing. Marigold, one of Dave's really old tunes was played, and was awesome! A good mix of old & new tunes, and plenty of banter in between songs, which definitely separates the DVD from the CD. There are several stories and jokes in between songs, and this is kind of what made the acoustic tour so different! One thing that the DVD is missing that most people that attended the show were probably disapointed in, was the absence of 'Floaty', which was played with the full band, but sang by Petra Haden, the violinist. This was one of the big highlights of the show for me, and to leave it out kind of takes away from truly how awesome the show was. No Floaty is not a huge deal, but I would have loved to see it included!

Overall, this DVD is a must have for any Foo Fighters fan, and really anyone who enjoys live acoustic music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A softer side of Foo Dec 13 2006
Format:Audio CD
I'm so happy that the Foo Fighters decided to exploit their softer side lately. The songs sound so good on the accoustic instruments! Very nice arrangments and the sound is good even if it's live.

The key song for me is Marigold, composed while Dave Grohl was still in Nirvana.

Among the few guests who play with the Foos on this record, note the presence of Pat Smear, who was on the first few years of the band's life. He was also present on Nirvana's unplugged in New York.

I just hope this doesnt mean the end of Foo Fighters, like Nirvana's unplugged show.

A cover album would be awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good CD Nov. 23 2006
By Benito
Format:Audio CD
As a casual fan of the band, I wasn't sure what to expect from this album. After listening to it the first time, I was completely amazed. It certainly reminds you of Nirvana unplugged, but this album is great in its own right. Go buy it.
