5.0 out of 5 stars A Permanent End to my Food Obsession..... FINALLY!, Mar 15 2010

FINALLY!!!! Consciousness Meets Food Addiction. THIS BOOK IS REVOLUTIONARY!,
By Lisa Holliday Lee "Facilitator of The Work of... (Berryville, VA) - See all my reviews

Ho Boy, am I relieved. Somebody finally wrote THE book. The book that has the possibility of truly freeing us from the bondage of Food - not through another stupid Diet and Exercise regime, and not through another tiresome POP PSYCHE book of feelings nonsense.

What makes this book stand apart is it goes right to the intersection of Mind and Mouth, where addiction kicks in, and shows you how to break that pattern with surgical precision. I have worked with the strategies in this book and I can tell you that they are LIFE CHANGING! Today, I run everyday, eat a beautiful diet (which may mean a fantastic piece of pie) and am no longer a 225 pound, xanax addicted depressive, in large part to the work with thinking that Laura Katleman-Prue has beautifully presented in this book. Her "training" with the Best of the Best (In my Humble Opinion) teachers out there, such as Byron Katie, Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti and on and on, make her uniquely qualified to bring this groundbreaking work to us.

I am so excited about this book that I am sending links out to everyone I know who has ever struggled with food and was indoctrinated with the same old Diet/Body Solution or the "You have Psychological Issues" crap - when in reality, there are simple thought patterns that are easily identified and short-circuited and Laura K-P shows you how.

So stop beating yourself up, ("I must be a mess"), or buying a bunch of new Diet Crap, like I did for years. This book offers steps to freedom inside you FAR BEYOND just the issue of food.

THIS IS REVOLUTIONARY! We Do NOT have to Suffer any more. Give this book as a gift to yourself - notice when you want to reject it (the Mind does not want you to mess with its patterns and mess up it's party!), and stick with it. You will be glad you did.

BRAVO!

Since I attended the weekend Skinny Thinking Intensive, everything has changed. I always believed that I would STRUGGLE with Food FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. It would never end. I was wrong. I had been told a lot of things about food, eating and addiction that were FLAT OUT WRONG!!!!!!!!! And believing them had stopped me from being free from the obsession with food.

LAURA PRUE BLOWS THESE OLD MYTHS OUT OF THE WATER! And with the techniques she offers, called Kung Fu's, I have literally changed EVERYTHING about my relationship with food. I eat healthy foods, but not because I SHOULD! Because I now WANT to. Laura showed me how to retrain my mind and body to just crave and enjoy the best diet ever. And to embrace hunger, and see it for what it really is - well, rather pleasant!! Totally at odds with the industries "You Won't Be Hungry" attitude. Making friends with hunger changed everything - and that is only one of MANY things I have gotten from this book.

Eating While Eating, another Kung Fu, shifted me radically, and fast. Oh I had heard basically about this strategy, but it was always around paying attention to your food while you eat and treat the whole event like a visit to Nirvana - hogwash! Through her treatment of Only Eat while you Eat, I found that eating isn't even that pleasurable to me. It is rather boring. So I don't use food as entertainment anymore except on the rare occasion. It just stopped being used that way all on its own, when I started using this Kung Fu technique. And there are a ton more, and enough that you will find the ones that work especially for you. Old ways just let go of me when I use these techniques. It is not me EFFORTING to be GOOD.... There is no Good and Bad days for me. There are just days. and Food is a natural, easy part of it, not an ongoing internal debate (or should I say, WAR!).

At this writing, I have never felt so free around food. Just two of the Kung Fus made a radical shift THE FIRST TIME I USED THEM!! Now, the two to three pounds a week I am losing is just a side benefit - the freedom from obsession is the thing.

I am not kidding you all - and I have done every diet program, studied nutrition, took up body building and running, studied with every spiritual teacher I could get my hands on and NONE OF IT RESULTED IN PERMANENT HEALING. This work has.

So I invite you to NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD ABOUT ADDICTIONS AND FOOD. IT CAN BE PERMANENTLY HEALED!!!! And this book is the way to do it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Approach to Emotional Overeating, May 21 2010
By O. Brown "Ms. O. Khannah-Brown" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Skinny Thinking: Five Revolutionary Steps to Permanently Heal Your Relationship With Food, Weight, and Your Body (Paperback)

This pragmatic book is part guidebook and part workbook to be used as part of the reader's journey to end emotional overeating. It is not a diet book, but a practical anti-diet book that walks you through five steps to learn how to eat to live rather than live to eat. The steps are: (1) Wise Thinking, (2) Wise Food Choices, (3) Wise Eating, (4) Wise Living, and (5) Wise Relationship with Your Body. As part of each step there are to-do lists so that you can monitor your progress and practice the concepts of each chapter in bite-size chunks.

Some of the theory underlying this book is based upon Byron Katie's inquiry process, a helpful psychological technique that is useful in questioning the assumptions we make, the stories we tell ourselves. A part of the book I found particularly helpful was conceptualizing the ego as three parts: Critic, Child, and Dreamer. The book also features tools for dealing with your dysfunctional thinking, called "Kung Fu" practices, and there are 18 different "Powerful Kung Fu"s.

There is much here that I expect to be helpful to me in dealing with my own emotional eating. I took extensive notes in the book and also wrote in my journal as I read. Overcoming emotional overeating is a practice and involves work and time, and the author is realistic in her expectations and helpful in her admonitions to be patient and tender with oneself.

It is important to note that the author is not in favor of intuitive eating--listening to your body and then choosing foods based upon what the body tells you to do. She says that when we are trying to stop emotional overeating that the messages from our bodies are not reliable guides to healthy eating and can throw us off because of our experiences with pleasure foods. So this would be an important difference between her way of thinking and some others, such as Geneen Roth, who write on this topic. If intuitive eating has failed for you, you may find help with this approach.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Book!, April 21 2010
By Derek Emge - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Skinny Thinking: Five Revolutionary Steps to Permanently Heal Your Relationship With Food, Weight, and Your Body (Paperback)
It dislodged some ingrained mental traps and lies that had never budged before. It moved me beyond the holiday/post holiday resignation that the most I could hope for was a return to my slightly-more-controlled battle with my 3 daily food-fixes. It gave me hope that I could go deeper than O.A. has taken me, and experience a truer freedom from entertainment/escape eating and establish a new relationship with food. The many insights I've found in just the first two chapters of the book, are crucial tools. The possibility of "dis-identifying" with a feeling, a food thought, a stressful thought, and with our "meat suits"/bodies, and instead identifying with our essence is REVOLUTIONARY.

I got the book because I needed more than what I've gotten from 12-step programs to deal with my most potent addiction and obsessions (food and body issues), and I got more, so much more.
