A warm experience,

This review is from: Sky Road (Audio CD)
I stumbled across this album after having heard most of Frances' sister Mary's work. I was immediately impressed by the overall sound and clean production. Guitar and base sounds resonate beautifully. Frances voice however took a little to get used to after being spoiled by Mary. France's voice is good but it does have a bit of a quiver sometimes. The songs however are good, not great but good as Frances uses some of Mary's songwriters. Two songs stand out for me: "The last word" and "Falling leaves" though some people may find some of this on the melodramatic side. The trick is to let yourself go with it and get immersed in the sound and sentiment behind the words. After the first listen my first impulse was to think some of this as sentimental trite but then I couldn't help going back for another listen, and then another and so on. I realised I was being a bit of a cynic in my approach and needed to get in touch with my own feelings about things again. After that I enjoyed this album quite a lot accepting it in its own terms, without having to compare it with Mary Black's music. That's Frances problem obviously, always having to play second fiddle to her sister when in fact she is good in her own right.
