Product Description

Album Description

2009 solo album from Interpol frontman Paul Banks, recorded under the guise of Julian Plenti. T his debut features Contributions from Mike Stroud of Ratatat, Sam Fogarino of Interpol, Charles Burst of The Occasion and Striker Manley of Stiff Jesus. This incredibly varied album runs the gamut from gorgeous Folk-tinged acoustic songs to huge orchestral guitar anthems. The palette changes from black and white to color and back, from regal Eastern European Synth sounds of 'Only If You Run' to the sad but triumphant brass of 'Unwind'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Familiar yet brand new, Aug 29 2009
By Ben Tremblay "Mélomane" (Quebec city, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
My first reaction when I saw this was "who is this guy?" I always have a bit of a problem with debut album from a solo artist. Unless it's a guy and his guitar like Jack Johnson, after all, who on earth plays all instruments? Real people form bands, then hope to make it big. I thought Julian Plenti was another one of those pre-made rock stars but when I noticed that the label was Matador, I got curious.

After listening to the first few song samples I found myself loving his material and bought the album: the production value, the atmosphere and lyricism was top notch. It's only when I got the cd in my car and played it from start to finish that I realized who Julian Plenti was; Interpol's Paul Banks. There's no mention of it anywhere on the cd, Plenti is introduced as a new artist and the picture makes it difficult to recognize him. The voice was definitely very similar but the cd being a lot less grim and heavy than Interpol's, the connection wasn't instantaneous for me.

So, I guess Banks passed the test: he managed to get me to listen to his cd, enjoy it AND purchase it without me knowing it was in fact the alter ego of one of my all time favorite bands in disguise. Sure, the sound is familiar and yet, it feels fresh and original. The music pulls at your heartstrings and is achingly beautiful on Is...Skyscraper. All I can say is that I highly recommend it
