Product Description

Description

“Slacker Uprising” traces Michael Moore’s 62-city tour of the swing states during the 2004 Presidential election and records the thrilling – and frightening – response he received across the country. Moore’s goal was to convince millions of non-voting “slackers” – mostly between the ages of 18-29 – to give voting a try. Starting out in Elk Rapids, Michigan, in front of an audience of 400, the tour caught on like wildfire with up to 16,000 slackers each night coming to see Moore and his traveling band of speakers, comedians, and musicians.

To encourage the slackers to show up, they were offered a clean change of underwear, free Ramen noodles, and a promise that no event would start before noon and no politician would be allowed to speak. These enticements filled basketball arenas and concert halls every night on the “Slacker Uprising Tour.”

Along with Moore’s appearance, “Slacker Uprising” features live performances or appearances by Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam), Roseanne Barr, Joan Baez, Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine), R.E.M., Steve Earle, and Viggo Mortensen. Original Score by Anti-Flag.

Special Features Include: *Noodlegate: Mike Bribes the Slackers *George W. Bueller’s Day Off *Storytime With Mike: My Pet Goat *The O’Reilly Factor for Kids *Crank Calling Pfizer: 212-573-1226 *They Worked for George W. Bush *Letter from the War Zone: Will They Ever Trust Us Again? *Canadian Elevator Music *Joan Baez and Michael Moore: America the Beautiful *Michael Moore, Dance Machine

I didn't mind Slacker Uprising, it's truly not bad, but it doesn't view like a complete film to me. This would have been best digested as a bonus disc to the excellent Fahrenheit 9/11. I guess it didn't get a full release and Mike was giving it away for free for a while too.

Essentially this is a documentary about Mike's 2004 college tour, trying to get "slackers" to get out there and vote (Democrat). Of course it has this whole sense of anticlimax because we all know how the 2004 election ended.

My favourite moments on the disc were the times when the disruptive Republican kids came to Mike's speaking dates chanting, "FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!" Mike counters them with, "More like four more wars!" There is also a group of evangelicals who decide to hold a pray-in since Democrat voters would naturally go to hell. Mike joins them in prayer but for different reasons.

Eddie Vedder, Joan Baez and Steve Earle drop in for a song or two which is my second favourite thing about this film. Otherwise, it sits on my shelf unwatched for the last year or so. I mean, we all know how that election ended, and no matter if you're liberal or consevative (I am neither), it's hard to believe that anybody wanted four more years of George W. Bush.

3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slacker Uprising, Sep 16 2008

Whenever Michael Moore produces a documentary that wakes up our sleeping complacent citizenry, I want to see it. I know he enrages those who prefer fiction, who like the status quo: the "I've got mine, now you get yours" economic/social attitude and the "I've got mine, now I'll ram mine down your throat" religious attitude.
The outrageous fiction and arrogant lies we have been blithely accepting, especially over the past 8 years, has brought America to its knees. I hope Michael continues to hold up a mirror to us.
