5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Jun 13 2003

Emma Donoghue's writing is beautiful and the plot is truly unique. You find yourself reading the entire book in one sitting by saying "just one more page..." Other novels of this style are put to shame by the sophisticated and true-to-life way the subject matter is dealt with and the characters are roughly based on real people. A magnificent read.

4.0 out of 5 stars intelligent and engaging, Feb 22 2006

This review is from: Slammerkin (Paperback)
This book is a real page turner, with vivid and engaging writing throughout. It is quite a testament that a book with a rather undesirable main character can keep you glued throughout, even when her behaviour is at its worst and most self-destructive. You're left still finding a way to relate to her, despite everything. It really takes you into victorian England, with all it's grit and grime, to where you can practically smell it.

For anyone who loves reading, period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real page turner, Feb 18 2011

This was a wonderful story, it is well written and keeps you from putting it down. I found it takes you on a real journey and you almost feel as though you are right there with the sounds and smells of old London. Looking forward to reading her other novels. Will recommend this to all my friends.
