4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Companion to a Classic Album, Dec 27 2004
By
Aaron Dawe (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Slayer - Still Reigning: Live 2004 (DVD)
Eighteen years after the release of one of the greatest metal albums of all time, Reign in Blood, Slayer have returned with the original line-up to bring out a DVD that captures every track from that album in sequence (although it's obvious that it wasn't performed that way at the concert). Reign in Blood was the most intense 28 minutes ever recorded for a major label release back in '86, and it's awesome to see that Slayer haven't lost their power and aggression since that time. The much-hyped 'rain of blood' during the performance of the final track is as cool and ridiculous as it sounds.

Surprisingly, the band is in top form and the material is played with precision and strength. I only noticed a few moments of sloppiness - even Jeff Hanneman, who usually muffs leads in concert, plays well. Dave Lombardo, who is in an awe-inspiring technician on the drums, continues to impress. Since RIB is so short, the DVD is filled with bonus live material from the LPs Hell Awaits, South of Heaven, and Season in the Abyss. Necrophiliac is a lot thicker than the thinly recorded version on Hell Awaits and is a highlight.

The only real complaints are the look of digital video (which always looks cheap in my eyes) and that the cameras don't really get in too close to the band for the most part. These are simply problems with budget and with the overall cost of this DVD, not something to really whine about.

5.0 out of 5 stars AHHHH!!!!!, Nov 9 2004

Trauma (Gotham City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Slayer - Still Reigning: Live 2004 (DVD)
Slayer performed an entire set dedicated to their landmark album Reighn in Blood from start to finish where towards the end blood starts raining on the stage covering the band in blood.
The result is amazing and I wish like hell I could have been there.
Slayers legendary status is forged in determination and for over 20 years they have never wavered or strayed from making the most aggresive and uncomprimising music in the heavy metal world.
They are kings on the verge of god-like status.
As other bands of their era rose and fell and trends passed Slayer pushed ahead.
Even when for a time in the 90's people kind of forgot about them and their original drummer left they continued on keeping their heads held high.
Now with Dave Lombardo back in the fold and metal entering yet another golden era Slayer are once again being given the respect they deserve.
This dvd aside form the amzing concert footage also contains a small retrospective of Slayer by each of the band members which is really really cool because you allmost never ever hear a thing about these guys ever so to hear frm their own mouths on their own terms makes this dvd a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Reigning Alright, Nov 4 2004
By Rebecca Lyle - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Slayer - Still Reigning: Live 2004 (DVD)
Alright, first off, it's Reign In Blood live in it's entirety, no song omitted, all on high quality DVD, that alone is worth the price sticker on this baby. These guys zoom through the setlist pretty quickly, playing every song flawlessly. It is so awesome watching them play Necrophobic, just listen to the speed of that song! The sound and camera quality is as good as it gets. There are many different camera angles. The show they put on was incredible. Lots of flashing lights, and the grand finale during Raining Blood where the stage actually rains blood on all of the band members!

Not only do you get that, but they throw in quite a few other classic crowd favorates as extra. You also get War Ensemble, Hallowed Point, Necrophiliac, Mandatory Suicide, Spill The Blood, and South Of Heaven. All of which are done exceedingly well.

Lastly, you get an interview with the band entitled Slayer In Their Own Words. Not one member is left out on this one, nor one topic. They discuss anything from the in and outs of Dave Lombardo to how Slayer came about to the hostility of the fans. It's all covered in a very short but sweet manner.

Slayer fans, do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Improves on the Warfield DVD!!, Nov 4 2004
By Ghost of Metal Past - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Slayer - Still Reigning: Live 2004 (DVD)
I thought the Warfield DVD concert was good but Still Reigning is just fantastic. The band sound at the top of their game. Even Tom seems to have gotten his voice back after the somewhat uneven performance in places on the Warfield DVD. The director and producer have done an outstanding job shooting the footage and capturing the audio.

This DVD also puts right the main sin of the Warfield DVD - the dreadful "Fans Rule" documentary. Still Reigning gives us what we deserve - a real, genuine interview and profile of the band. All four of them get their due, instead of just Kerry shouldering the load. They come across as intelligent, well-spoken guys. I wish that interview was a bit longer. A full hour would have been great.

I think the Warfield and Still Reigning together give you a good collection of live Slayer - and that's what it's all about.
