Escapism at its best!!, Aug 19 2010
This review is from: Slayers of Seth (Paperback)
Being an "anything medieval" buff, and finding it fairly difficult to find enjoyable novels set in that time period, I was thrilled when I accidentally stumbled upon Paul Doherty. I was so thrilled, in fact, that I wrote him an email saying just that -- and he responded!!! Following his writing into the Ancient Egyptian setting was a leap for me, as it is not a time period I'm particularly interested in; I have since read and cherished all of the novels of the series. The characters are well-crafted and highly engaging, the plot always has a nice twist or mystery, but it's never stressful (no kids ever get hurt, which would have probably spoilt the experience for me:)), and I'm always left wanting more of Paul Doherty's writing. It is not a demanding novel-- in that you can read and enjoy it on a plane, or in a line-up-- but it still maintains a high standard of writing. The plot is fairly straight-forward and well crafted, which is probably what makes it so readable. Think Paul Doherty has done an excellent job figuring out what it is people enjoy reading, as he's very good at delivering the goods!

This fourth of seven books is excellent, as I had expected it to be., July 6 2009
This review is from: Slayers of Seth (Paperback)
This book launches you back in time, back with old favourites Amerotke, Chief Judge in the Hall (Temple) of the goddess Ma'at, and his always- faithful man-servant, Shufoy. All seven of the books in this series (which I call The Amerotke Series) feature amazing research, attention to detail, rich plots and characters, twists and turns to keep you guessing till the end, as well as humour. Yes, the ancient Egyptians had a wry sense of humour, as is evidenced by archaeological findings over the years. These books can be read in any order, but for the sake of not spoiling the ocassional plot twist, I recommend reading them in order. 1. The Mask of Ra 2. The Horus Killings 3. The Anubis Slayings 4. The Slayers of Seth 5. The Assassins of Isis 6. The Poisoner of Ptah 7. The Spies of Sobeck If you share my interest in ancient Egypt, or if you simply enjoy a good mystery story, you'll love these books.

Fourth Book in a Great Series, Nov 15 2006
By J. Chippindale - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Slayers of Seth (Paperback)
Paul Doherty is the consummate professional when it comes to writing historical mystery novels. I for one do not know how he can be so prolific with his offering of books and yet make sure that each of them is well researched. Whether they be 13th, 14th, or fifteenth century they are always true to the period. He has also written books about Alexander the Great and is now turning his hand to novels of Ancient Egypt at the time of the most influential period in its long history. The chief judge of the might Pharaoh, Lord Amerotke is already in the midst of a murder case. Ipumer, a young scribe is found dead from poisoning and the prosecution is pursuing a conviction against his lover, the lady Neshratta, who they claim had tired of their dalliance. If she is found to be guilty she will suffer the fate of being buried alive in the sands of the desert. However before the trial can be concluded the powerful Pharaoh-Queen summons the judge to the Temple of Seth, where the remains of another high profile murder, that of general Balet are brought before him. One of Egypt's great heroes has been killed and Pharaoh Hatusu herself has decided it is time for her to intervene. She believes that the murder of one of Egypt's finest generals is the beginning of something much more sinister and calls on Amerotke for help . . .
