Book Description

Sheree Fitch has read this book to audiences from sea to sea to sea in Canada, in the Himalayas, and along the eastern coast of Africa. Her first two books, Toes in My Nose and Sleeping Dragons All Around, launched her career as a poet, rhymster, and a "kind of Canadian female Dr. Seuss." Fitch has won almost every major award for Canadian children's literature since then, including the 2000 Vicky Metcalf Award for a Body of Work Inspirational to Canadian Children. She has over twenty-five books to her credit. Her adult novel, Kiss The Joy As It Flies (2008), was met with critical praise and became a Canadian bestseller within eight weeks. Fitch's home base is the east coast of Canada. She dances with dragons daily.

Michelle Nidenoff's illustrations have been featured in magazines and children's books, including The Canadian Children's Treasury. Among her credits is a bronze award from the Broadcast Design Association in Ontario. She lives in Toronto.

From the Publisher

An enormously successful and charmingly illustrated book of poems that take the fear out of nighttime demons. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Available in a 20th anniversary reprint edition, Mar 26 2009

(REAL NAME)
I read this book with my three year old son in a bookstore the other day and we both enjoyed it. I am surprised to see Amazon Canada does not currently list the reprint edition.

I have given the book four stars because I think it's worth some attention, and as half stars do not exist in this system. I will not say whether I'd have given it a half star more or less. The story is good, though not extraordinary. What is of interest is the author's unusual choice of meter--and her successful deployment of it, along with some clever rhymes and turns of phrase, on a few pages. In short, this book is not perfect, but it offers something that more consistent books often do not: some true verbal exploration. Fitch is referred to as "the Canadian Dr. Seuss" in one of the blurbs, which to me can only mean (as that adjective often does) she is one among the weaker cousins of the North. This description gets much wrong. The work is worth having and reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, enchanting tongue-twister great for young kids., Dec 7 1998
By A Customer
Sleeping Dragons All Around is a delightful, rhyming tongue-twister that absoutely enchanted my young children! It is humorously yet beautifully illustrated which enhances its attractiveness to children of all ages. It also helped my 2 year old son to overcome nighttime fears of the dark and of monsters. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book and a GREAT bedtime story for ages 2-10!, Aug 3 1997
By A Customer
This book has been my son's favorite since he was two. It's use of the English language is fun. The words just roll off of your tongue. The names of the dragons are simply wonderful -- Beelzebub, Ching-Chung, Jebediah Jones, Pythagorus.

I would recommend this book for bright pre-schoolers and for all kids who demand more than picture books! It's a great read for child and for parent.

It's definitely worth the wait (out of print)!
