An FBI agent in the Special Crimes Unit has lost significant periods of memory during the course of an investigation. As she realizes the depth of her problem, the number of murder victims, and the new state of her love life, she begins to solve the case. Kathy Garver's voice sounds too young to be believable as a federal law enforcement official. Compounding the problem, her male characters suffer from inconsistent and inappropriate vocal tones. And her attempts at a regional accent do nothing to further the credibility of those who speak it. Garver's diction is clear, however, and her pacing appropriate for the story. Riley Crane woke up in a beach cottage fully dressed, a gun under her pillow, covered in blood, and lots of holes in her memory about the last three weeks. Sounds bad to normal people. But Riley is a clairvoyant ex-military FBI agent who specializes in the occult. She immediately goes about piecing together the events of the last three weeks. Riley had been sent to Opal Island by Noah Bishop, Chief of the FBI's Special Crimes Unit (SCU) to investigate reports of dark occult activity. Yet Riley has no idea if she ever learned anything. The first thing Riley notices is that her "spooky senses" are AWOL. Even though she cannot tap into her spooky senses, they seem to still be draining energy from her physical body. Riley can hardly eat enough PowerBars or drink enough orange juice throughout the day to maintain her normal weight. With her special abilities out of commission, Riley feels vulnerable. Then Riley is thrown for a loop when she learns that somewhere in the last three weeks she has taken a lover. Not just any man either; Riley's lover is Ash Prescott, the district attorney.

When a decapitated body is found hanging over an area that appears to have recently been used in an occult rite, Riley begins the long last of putting pieces together. Everything points to a psychic serial killer from her past. Problem is that the man is dead. Riley, herself, killed him. However, in Riley's business, dead does not necessarily mean gone.

**** I found this to have a few unusual twists from what I have read in previous paranormal thrillers. Everything is written in such a way that I, as the reader, came to think of the spooky senses as totally normal. The author does not even attempt to make everything seem creepy, odd, or strange. Everything that goes on, even the spooky senses, is nonchalantly explained. This made everything even more realistic to me.

Author Kay Hooper has done a terrific job with this story involving Riley and Ash. I certainly look forward to more novel involving the agents under Noah Bishop command. Perhaps the author will give a full length story to the guy who sees ghosts in Technicolor. I can only hope. ****
