Product Description

From Amazon.com

This 1991 thriller by Joseph Ruben (True Believer) works up to a point: Julia Roberts plays an abused wife who fakes her death and starts anew under a different identity in Iowa. Her psychopathic husband (Patrick Bergin) figures it out and stalks her and her new boyfriend (Kevin Anderson). The best part of the film is the moody isolation of Roberts's life with Bergin. Ruben ingeniously stakes out the story by presenting what looks like an ideal life between the two--a nice house on the ocean, a seemingly healthy sex life, etc.--and then, whammo! Vital to the plot but less interesting is everything afterward, but that's less an inherent script problem than it is obvious studio pressure to push Roberts as a cute star. There's even a sequence where the actress tries on a series of hats while Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" plays on the soundtrack. Such insistent valentines to Roberts destroys most of Ruben's momentum and the film's credibility, and the project never quite recovers. --Tom Keogh

I was cruising throught Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB)today and found this movie rated as 5.8 out of 10. I had to set the record straight. This movie is one of the best thriller/suspense movies I've ever seen. Patrick Bergen should have won an Oscar. He scared the hell out of me and that's not easy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleeping With The Enemy, Oct 21 2011
This review is from: Sleeping With the Enemy (VHS Tape)
I had been looking for this movie for some time ,when I found it on amazon I got excited ,this movie is about a very nice girl Julia Roberts who was married to an abuser ,So many women go through this abuse every single day and believe there isn't any way out ,(sad )movie is very well done, If one knows someone who is living this life portrayed by Julia Robers, maybe they should watch this movie,it could give them the courage they need to leave an abuse-age marriage ??
I am very happy with the video it arrived in very good condition plays like a new movie, will be ordering many more movies from amazon ,:

3.0 out of 5 stars A Hollywood View of Spousal Abuse, Jun 1 2009

Julia Roberts plays Laura, an abused woman who escapes from the cruelty of her controlling husband(stiffly played by Patrick Bergin). She hatches a clever escape plan and runs away to a college town in Iowa, where she meets, of course, a handsome professor(a cuddly Kevin Anderson). Since this is a Hollywood movie, it is not a realistic look at spousal abuse, but it does work work well as a thriller. The early scenes of Laura's life in a beachfront home under the thumb of her abusive husband work especially well. Once the story moves to a homespun Iowa, the story lags a bit and there are too many scenes of the cute drama professor wooing this new mysterous woman in town. The professor's idea of a fun date is to allow her to try on the drama department's theatre costumes and this scene features a montage of Ms. Roberts in funny hats which seems goofy given the nature of the film. This film came out just after Pretty Woman and during a slew of movies that Ms. Robarts did during the height of her career, and it was obviously a star vehicle, produced to highlight Ms. Robert's obvious charms, and she does a decent job of playing a frightened woman who finds her inner strength despite an abrupt and violent ending.
