Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Every collaboration with director Tim Burton has produced something uniquely special from Danny Elfman. This is their joint homage to the horror films that inspired their youths. Apart from being the largest orchestra the composer has worked with, it's also his loudest score, on a positively operatic scale. The Headless Horseman is given a motif of Gothic enormity; its every appearance a speaker- testing swell of wry wickedness. Elfman's style by this point in his career has gone beyond the stand-alone set-pieces that characterised the likes of Batman or Edward Scissorhands. So the Horseman' s musical moments are worked into the fabric of the score in the same as Ichabod Crane's and a generic "shock" motif. "The Windmill" demonstrates the style's best, covering a sequence of flashback narrative. The music dips and peaks to the cuts between the spooky steed and some eerie exposition. Instead of thematic development en masse, Elfman aims for an integrated underscore that works beneath and above the action simultaneously. By the time of "The Chase" your senses will have been assaulted sufficiently to cope with your wide-eyed (eared?) first reaction to this densely orchestrated terrifying track. No homage was ever HAMMERed home so well. --Paul Tonks

3.0 out of 5 stars dark and atmospheric, May 2 2004

This review is from: Sleepy Hollow Score (Audio CD)
This music is perfect in the film, but when listened to apart from the film, most of it doesn't hold its own on its own. There are of course many sections that are excellent, but it's rarely sustained. The music always dies down or becomes too atmospheric, not melodic enough. This can be boring, unless you're feeling comatose and have the patience for these slow dark atmospheric sounds. However, a few of the tracks are very good as a whole, like "The Chase", which is a fast, dark, violent piece that I like very much and often listen to when I'm in the mood for some erratic eccentric nervous music. If you like this soundtrack, you will love the one to Bram Stoker's Dracula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Elfman does it Again, Mar 25 2004
This review is from: Sleepy Hollow Score (Audio CD)
Danny Elfman does it again. Once again, master film-maker, Tim Burton, and masterer composer, Danny Elfman, blend their trademark styles together seamlessly. Danny's haunting music combines perfectly with the gothic feel of the movie. Some of the best tracks are ones that have the ghostly boys oratory singing. The track, "Into the Woods" is a beautiful and mysterious song, combining sweeping violin themes and a haunting voice of a female singer. Perfect for Halloween listening, highly recomended for Elfman fans, like me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Gothic and Atmospheric, Mar 21 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sleepy Hollow Score (Audio CD)
The track for Sleepy Hollow is an overwhelming and chilling collection of orchestral music indeed. Many of the titles fit the scene perfectly. The choir does their best in the one called"Into The Woods" while the violins get their share of center stage in"The Chase." Definatly Elfman's best,(Batman Returns sharing first place)this track is perfect to play during a film with no music or while your driving home on a long trip, if you're not too disturbed by the chorus and the sinister violins and drums.
