This book is the basis for the motion picture 'Mr. Holmes' which I saw first. The first part of this book was an excellent read and put meat into the character portrayed in the movie. Mitch Cullin made a major mistake by killing off the character of Roger and in my opinion ruined the story. The movie didn't do that ... Roger was badly stung by wasp stings but survived. The storyline created by the screenwriter made more sense and tied Holmes' past with his present and Holmes was able to learn from his past and make amends to the young woman he failed through Roger and his mother.. This book wasn't cheap and I consider it a waste of money. Don't read the book, buy the movie.

"A Slight Trick of Mind" is ingenious. It consists of three tightly interwoven stories. Sherlock Homes is well into his senior years, now retired he busies himself as a beekeeper. It is beautifully written as it explores how Holmes is still a viable mind even as he struggles with the indignities of old age. Other top recommendations: "Zorro: A Novel" (Isabella Allende), "My Fractured Life" (Rikki Lee Travolta), and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" (Mark Haddon).
