PreSchool-Grade 1-- Told in rhyme, this is the story of a slinky black cat who prowls at night and becomes a thief. After his loot is discovered, he decides to stay home nights. While there's nothing wrong with this book, there's nothing to recommend it, either. The text is somewhat workmanlike, with very precise rhythm but not much charm. The full-color illustrations lack the personality needed to draw children into the story or to make Slinky an interesting character. Quite simply, the cat steals stuff, then stops. It's hard to imagine many preschoolers who would sit through the whole book. There's just nothing to it.

I am a fan of Lynley Dodd's books. I love how she plays with words and rhyme. This book also offers an opportunity to talk about the ethics and consequences of stealing.

I don't know why the School Library Journal would write such a negative review because this is a delightful book and much loved by all the children in my extended family. It seems to particularly appeal to the 3-4 year olds. The little ones just love the rhythm of the words and I find it to be fun to read!

Ignore the School Book Journal review above. This is a great little book! I have read it many times to my son and he's always riveted. I like the book, the word play, the way things work out in it. I would recommend it to anyone.
