I wrote a review for this a long time ago. I gave it 5 stars. Nearly 200 albums, 20 shows, and 2 1/2 years in a band later, I realize how average this really is.
The lyrics are still pretty good: angry, vulgar, obscene, yet occasionally clever and sometimes even eloquent.
The singing: Okay, but nothing great.
The growling: Oh, please. Maybe two songs have a decent growl, and that's due to the clean/growl transition.
The rapping: Not really rap, per se, but excellent flow and delivery.
The riffs: Tired, weak, and they sound like Korn outtakes. That equates to being pretty bad.
The DJ/turntabling: My two year old sister could do better. And they have two DJ's, too.
The drumming: Jordison's alright, and the percussionist idea was somewhat new, but overall trite and predictable.
This album was an attempt to be original. It nearly revived metal in the U.S., although simultaneously giving birth to a poser/mallgoth subculture, that is quickly dying out. I could recommend hundreds of bands you could rather listen to, and most are currently on the rise.
For what this album is, it's good. Iowa was a horrible follow-up. If you like angry, hostile, and brief bursts of music attempting to be original and don't mind vulgar lyrics and lacking musicianship, check it out.
There's better. I know that now.
