"Your segment is one of the best in the news broadcast. Always very informative and useful. Keep up the good work." —Tony Cole

"I watch ‘Consumer Alert’ often and just love the segment. I find it very informative and have often used your advice. Thanks!" —Helen Viveiros-Dunlop

Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses—they’re broke!

Canada is a nation drowning in debt. We used to be known as savers, but savings rates are negative for the first time in Canadian history. We have become a consumer-driven society, buying things we don’t need with money we don’t have.

The Smart Canadian’s Guide to Building Wealth is all about money: How to get it, how to keep it, and how to make it grow. Pat Foran delivers a strong message about why Canadians are in such rough financial shape, as well as practical advice on how you can gain control of your financial situation and build wealth of your own.

You’ll learn secrets of financial success from wealthy Canadians, how they got to be where they are today, and their advice on how you can do better financially. And you’ll get practical, straightforward advice from one of Canada’s leading consumer advocates on:

  • How to reduce your dependence on credit and cut down your debt by recognizing the difference between good debt and bad debt, choosing the right credit card, knowing the facts about debt consolidation, and more.
  • How to stop wasting your hard-earned money and start saving it in many areas, including: cars, insurance, shopping wisely, and taxes.
  • How to harness the power of the money you do have and make it work for you through real estate, RRSPs, RESPs, choosing the right financial advisor, and more.

About the Author

Pat Foran is seen by millions of Canadians each week on the CTV Network as the Consumer Reporter for CTV News in Toronto, and the Consumer Expert on CTV’s Canada AM, Canada’s number-one national morning show. His "Consumer Alert" segment offers financial and consumer advice to Canadians every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY.. a personal finance book that people can use!!!, Aug 16 2006
By
C. Bateman "Always striving to better in ever... (Toronto, Ontario - Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Smart Canadian's Guide to Building Wealth (Paperback)
I would consider this to be possibly the most widely applicable personal finance books ever written! I have taught MBA personal finance and both speak and write publicly on issues pertaining to personal finance but the truth is most of those whose attempt to educate the public on this issues choose to address the 'sexy' topics and miss the less exciting every day issues that make the biggest difference.

Unlike the typical glitz of books on this topic you will get no promise of a new PORSCHE 911 by following the guidance offered, and may still be no closer to that offshore estate. This book hits it at the core. It addresses the pitfalls and traps that people miss everyday and the merits of how little adjustments and research can make a huge difference. It is filled with the wisdom of issues that you often do learn, but only after the cost of the mistake.

It was once said that a penny earned is a penny saved - this is now long outdated and far from the truth. With top tax rates at over 45% the fact is that an after tax penny is nearly two pre-tax! Stop buying books with Yachts and tropical islands on the cover and chances are you will be more likely to actually learn the skills to have one at some point. This should be a mandatory personal finance 101 for everyone - the fact is most could use the overview.

Best of luck to reaching where you want to go!

Calum Ross

I just purchased this book and I think this is one of the best investments I have ever made. I am truly impressed by the quality of information, the organisation and delivery of that information etc. The book covers almost every aspect of financial planning. I am still in college and I think this is an excellent book for building a strong base for the future. I highly reccomend this book to anyone looking for answers about anything related to personal finance. Even if you are sesoned veteran , you'll find something new and helpful for sure! A+++++ all the way!
