Learn financial basics - quickly, April 18 2009
This review is from: The Smart Canadian's Guide to Saving Money: Pat Foran is On Your Side, Helping You to Stop Wasting Money, Start Saving It, and Build Your Wealth (Paperback)
This is a simple, common sense guide to your personal finances that covers the bases. Each chapter covers a topic and is very short - so you can easily flip through to the sections that interest you most and skip others. He doesn't go into any topic in great depth but covers the basics and guides you to other resources where relevant. Although I would say I knew much of what's in the book already, there were quite a number of 'golden nuggets' of information that definitely made it worth the read! For example, I didn't know about the different types of life insurance, what kinds of insurance are a rip-off etc.
Recommended reading for people starting to plan their financial future.

The Smart Canadian's Guide to Saving Money by Pat Foran, Dec 16 2011
This review is from: The Smart Canadian's Guide to Saving Money: Pat Foran is On Your Side, Helping You to Stop Wasting Money, Start Saving It, and Build Your Wealth (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have read to help consumers. So much information about all of our day to day dealings with pretty much everything that may cross our path, from banking, buying products, insurance, buying a car and so much more. I have also purchased this book for family members as well.
I highly recommend this book to everyone.

READ THIS MA FELLOW CANADIANS!, Jan 2 2011
This review is from: The Smart Canadian's Guide to Saving Money: Pat Foran is On Your Side, Helping You to Stop Wasting Money, Start Saving It, and Build Your Wealth (Paperback)
I'm still in university and am sure glad I picked up this book at Costco. I've read a bunch of other books, but this one takes the cake. The main reason is because it covers not just the basics, but all the other topics other authors haven't even seemed to consider. He covers debt, credit cards, RRSPs, RESPs, company stocks, mortgages, insurances, grocery savings (like if you mention Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code, you can get $10 off just because the store rang up the wrong price), wealth planning - lawyers, wills, financial planners, big money spenders - homes, renos, cars etc and so much more. In the beginning, he also includes many tid bits of advice from many well-known wealthy Canadians like Galen Weston, Jim Pattison & Ted Rogers.
This book is such a smooth read, from beginning to end, like a story book. He starts off with debt and how to curb it, then moves to saving and once you've saved, how to invest and build up your wealth.
One complaint I can imagine people saying after reading this is that he did not go into great depths when it came to investment talk. But keep in mind, this is a guide to saving money, not how to invest your money. It's not the goal or end-all game plan of this book.
At the same time, I don't want to hype up this book and say that it's the only book you should read. But simply, include this book in your search for financial aid. This is a great book to help you get one foot in the door. My mum read this book (she has always been great with her money) and even she was amazed at how much more she learned. There are so many areas in society where people can save, it takes a lot of time and effort to find out on your own, many never even come close to discovering that bag of money sitting under the park bench. Pat Foran makes our lives easier by having already done the research and shoves it all so nicely into a 300 page book.
