If you are looking for a very basic explanation on how to put together stairs this is not a bad choice. Quick and easy to read but not very specific.

The information contained within the book was detailed and clear. I've read a lot of instructions on building stairs, but this presentation was not only clearer, but with the pictures and tips and tricks, I found it to be my best source.

There were a few titles on building stairs and railings on Amazon. I ordered two. They're excellent books on the topic -- if you want to read "A Tale of Two Cities" before you even start planning a project. I was startled when taking this edition of "Stairs & Railings: Step-by-step Projects" from the shipping box; it's only a 96-page paperback book."Dang!" I thought. After a few seconds of flipping through the pages I realized "this" was exactly the type of guide I was looking for regarding building stairs, etc. I'm rebuilding the interior staircase that goes from the first floor to the basement. You know, risers that are a little less "basement step" looking. This "step-by-step" reference is excellent. The text is concise, perfectly organized, and key information is well highlighted. The type is even large. The graphics and illustrations are perfect. The measurement charts, information about real "options" to consider when planning, construction tips, and drawings of "exactly" what and how all the pieces of a staircase should look like when they come together -- are terrific. I like that this book can tuck in a toolbox and be referred to in seconds. Ha! The margins of the pages even have enough white space to write notes on. This is not a woodworking/decorative trim reference. It's about "everything" you do before you add the "handsome" to a significant building effort. This is also, I just realized, a great book to carry around if you're buying a house and want to inspect a staircase that you may have some questions about -- you know, when "something" just doesn't seem right. I'm not familiar with this publisher so I'll have to see what other guides they offer. Five stars for all the right reasons -- and I don't give many of these out. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

A very good, simplified guide for building or remodeling your own stairs and railings. Not too technical, which is where many books on this subject go south. Good illustrations too. A wonderful addition to my home improvement library.
