Product Description

From Kirkus Reviews

Written by a doctor of optometry, this well-conceived, intelligently compiled, clearly organized compendium of eye care offers basic information about the eye, an alphabetical listing of eye and visual system disorders, and, without prejudice, both conventional and alternative treatments for a wide range of common and unusual eye problems. Part one gives basic information about the eyes and how to care for them, including detailed sections on nutrition, herbal therapies, and homeopathic remedies. The second section begins with a troubleshooting guide of symptoms and possible causes and a brief but thorough section on first aid, then discusses disorders of the eye and visual system in alphabetical order, from accommodative insufficiency and albinism to styes, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and suppression. Each entry gives an overview of the disorder; conventional treatments and self-treatments; tables detailing effective nutritional, herbal, and homeopathic remedies; and a list of general recommendations. The third section offers eye-care techniques and procedures, including the latest information on refractive surgeries and vision therapies. The appendix contains a useful glossary, a list of recommended suppliers of the supplements and remedies recommended throughout the book, and organizations to consult for further information. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. The herbal, homeopathic, and nutritional remedies for various eye disorders are very helpful...as are the explanations of how to use them. This book seems to cover every eye and vision problem there is. An excellent book for anyone interested in their vision and how the eye works

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a joke, right?, May 8 2012

I had previously read Anshel's chapters in his Visual Ergonomics Handbook and come to the conclusion that he held some, shall we say, unorthodox opinions (for example his recommendation of unproven treatments such as behavioural optometry and vision therapy, and his scaremongering over the extremely low levels of radiation emitted by computer monitors), but I was flabbergasted to find out while reading this book that an optometrist could recommend the use of homeopathic treatments (i.e. water) and considered them to be "very effective" (p. 6). The evidence-base for the effectiveness of homeopathic treatments is weak to non-existent, it is quackery of the first order and would require the laws of physics (and logic) to be chucked out of the window, stamped on and burnt in order to have any discernible effect beyond that of a placebo. It is outrageous irresponsibility for someone who claims to be a vision expert to be recommending this flim-flam and bunkum. Please consider buying a book written by somebody who has the slightest respect for the scientific method and not this hokum.

Please be aware that this is an old 1999 edition of SMART MEDICINE FOR YOUR EYES. There is now a totally updated and fully revised version published by Square One Publishers. The 2011 edition is now "the" best and most up-to-date version of Dr. Anshel's work on behalf of alternative eye care. Go "look" for it . . .
