Get Smart (2008),

Ce commentaire est de: Get Smart / Max la menace (Widescreen Special Edition) (DVD)
I found this to be a brilliant re-invention of the original material, true to it's core essence while not being slave to details.I found the new Max to be a truly sympathetic character (more so than the classic Max) and, at last, we understand how Max can be a respected "Top Agent" and still be such a screw up (tons of theoretical knowledge with very little field experience). Can't go wrong with this film.

A Very Appropriate Tribute to the Original,
By Ian Gordon Malcomson (Victoria, BC) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME) (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
Ce commentaire est de: Get Smart (2008) (Widescreen) (DVD)
I was once a child of the sixties, raised on a steady diet of TV comedies loaded with cornball, slapstick, and spoofy routines. The "Get Smart" series was no exception. Its creator, Mel Brooks, went one step further and used it as a clever means to parody the secret workings of the CIA and the KGB during zany time called the Cold War. It was one of my favourite programs because it was outrageously funny, daringly original, full of memorable throwaway lines and next-to-useless gadgets. This latest Steve Carell/Anne Hathaway version definitely lives up to the original. As usual, Max, as bumbling Agent 86 for Control, once again muddles through his assignment in a delightfully goofy manner, while his partner, Agent 99, carries the day with the highest of professional dedication and mettle. The plotline involves a series of hastily planned, loosely strung-together adventures that take us into the heart of the real world of evil where one quickly finds the ever sophisticated energies and destructive designs of Kaos at work. There are lots of close calls and high jinks to keep the viewer amused in this movie: everything from a Control-ordered mission to seek and destroy a Kaos factory that is supposedly making 'yellow cake' to the dynamic duo's follow-up efforts to foil a heinous plot by the archfiend, Seigfried, to destroy the world leadership in one fell swoop. This movie offers the viewer many hair-raising antics, many laughs, and political jabs as it endeavours to bring "Get Smart" into the post-Cold War twenty-first century. Underlying this latest "Get Smart" rendition is the subtle message that Brooks would likely happily endorse: governments, regardless of what side of the issue, are always open to public satire when they overstate and simplify the righteousness of their cause. Good family entertainment and a way for us older types to connect with the younger generation.
