Product Description

The thrilling sequel to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Tell Max it concerns the Sandman…

Both had supposedly outlived their usefulness to the Circus, the British Secret Intelligence Service: George Smiley, the retired head of espionage, and General Vladimir, an aging informant who reported to him. When the general walks into a bullet after sending an urgent message to his old handler, the Circus asks Smiley to “tidy things up.” But Smiley hears Vladimir’s message as a call to arms against his nemesis, the Soviet super spy Karla, once again tantalizingly within his grasp.

Alec Guinness reprises the role of British spymaster George Smiley in this gripping sequel to the television masterpiece Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Filmed on location in London, Paris, Hamburg, and Berne, Smiley’s People also stars Eileen Atkins, Anthony Bate, Bernard Hepton, Michael Lonsdale, Beryl Reid, Patrick Stewart, and Bill Paterson.

Like the other famous best-seller turned BBC series coming from the unchallenged master of the intelligent spy thriller John LeCarre, this original teleplay is an absorbing treatise on the hidden and conflicted corners of the human heart, the many ways in which our own natures feed into and extend the darker impulse of a society bent on pursuing the secrets and treachery that ever lurks for the unsuspecting victim. Here, in the finale of LeCarre's three best-selling novels tracing the pilgrim's progress of George Smiley, the intrepid and unlikely hero of the post-industrial Western world, Alec Guiness wonderfully reprises his role as George Smiley, concluding LeCarre's marvelously convoluted narrative. Thus do we trace the continuing history of human perfidy, moral compromises, and treachery native to the world of British intelligence.
In "Smiley's People", the object of Smiley's ministrations is once again thrust toward achieving final revenge against the legendary Karla, the Chief of the Soviet Covert Espionage Bureau, played masterfully in an understated fashion by Patrick Stewart. Having stuck a devastating blow against Karla previously through the ingenious employment of Jerry Westerby in the Far East, Smiley now turns to using an assassination in London of an obscure Eastern European émigré and would-be counter-revolutionary into an entry-point into Karla's domain, and as the Circus (British Intelligence) begins to unravel the many points of light this careful sifting of signs through tradecraft, they discover the one irresistible lure they need to tempt Karla out of the darkness and into their waiting clutches.

From London to Paris to Hamburg to Berne to Berlin during the intriguing years of the Cold War, this sequel(once removed*) to Tinker Tailor couldn't be better. Whether or not you have read the book or seen the first television mini series it is a good'un. How could it not be with the likes of the magnificent Alec Guinness in the lead role? Sharing the 'stage' with Guinness is a wonderful cast of characters including such giants as Bernard Hepton, Patrick Stewart, Eileen Atkins, Beryl Reid and Anthony Bate. Together they bring Le Carre's third book in the trilogy to life against a backdrop of some of Europe's most fascinating locales. It's a must see.
*The second book in the trilogy was not made into a series.

The miniseries is absolutely brilliant. Beautifully written, acted, and directed. A perfect screen rendering of one of the greatest spy novels ever, and at a great price.

But this is a region 2 DVD, and therefore does not play on my DVD player, here in North America. I would like to see Amazon specify the region of every DVD advertised on its website.

It is a great show and a good price, except i can't play it in my DVD player in North America. It is maufactored in Europe so I can only watch it on my lap top, 1/4 of the screen. Not as much fun, and I would not have bought it if I knew this beforehand.

Smiley,Yes, Bond, No!

This is espionage of the highest order! An excellent 3 disc miniseries comprised of six parts, each one hour in length. As a longtime fan of John LeCarre, this adaptation of the book by the same title accurately depicts the Cold War adversaries of Great Britain's MI5 and the Soviet Union's, KGB. Smiley's People has an excellent cast headed by Alec Guiness as George Smiley. George, ever the paragon of English propriety, is surrounded by unsavory characters both past and present. As such, he doggedly pursues his quarry, and must inevitably resort to the sordid tactIcs of espionage employed by lesser mortals. The plot which is intricate requires the viewer's full attention to be fully appreciated. Those familiar with "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and the more recent release of "A Most Wanted Man" will enjoy this series.
