Smoke Signals,

This review is from: Smoke Signals (Widescreen) (DVD)
I originally saw this movie years ago, and it always had remained in my heart. It's a wonderful story that has a message, but there are lots of laughs in it. I would recommend this product to anyone. As far as the vendor goes, I received this in the mail incredibly fast. It was mailed the day after I ordered it, and the price was very reasonable. It was in new condition, as it was advertised to be. Thumbs up all the way.

Hey Victor, what about that movie?,

Sheman Alexi has created a masterpiece of fiction with 'Smoke Signals.' The characters are easy going and dynamic, the plot line moves along at a comfortable pace and there is just enough drama mixed with the comedy to allow the audience to catch thier breath. If you only watch the scene in which Victor teaches Thomas how to "be a real Indian" you'll see what I mean. Alexie strives to break down the steriotypes built up by the classic westerns and all the other cowboy and indian movies by playing on those very steriotypes. He also uses natural settings and Native American actors (unlike so many other films about Indians that use white guys in brown make-up). Alexie's wit and writing tallent has definitly earned him a spot in this movie critics hall of fame!

If, as I did, you got this one because of its trailer (in my case, included with, and also commented on within, the marvelous "Reel Injun" documentary), you probably found the idea of a comedy with Native American cast and crew irresistible. Unfortunately the trailer pretty much focuses on the only comic scenes in the film, and gives little or no hint of what it's really about. As other reviewers have noted, it's a gripping tale about the developing and changing relationship between two young men from the "rez" (Coeur d'Alene) who'd grown up together, and also their relationships with their families. Both had tragic childhoods, one with an abusive father who eventually left (and died while away) and the other's parents were killed in a fire when he was an infant. There are numerous flashbacks to various earlier stages in their lives, and while in some cases these can be a little confusing, others fill in info about the past which would be way-too-soon spoilers if shown in strict chronological order.
