Smokin' Aces is a poor man's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The cast is beyond terrific. There's even the surprsisngly good Alicia Keys playing a hit woman! You have Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Ryan Reynolds and Jeremy Piven in it so that's a pretty good crew. Throw in a gratuitous Ben Affleck and away we go.

Only we don't. The pacing of this movie should have been like Lock Stock. It's far too slow. It takes almost 20 minutes of talking to set up the premise. Then it's ultra violent but in such an obvious over-the-top way. I mean, one guy has a chainsaw. Hasn't that been done enough? Where are the new ideas?

The actual story is pretty cool--a team of hitmen descend on Lake Tahoe to try to snag the million dollar bounty on a Mafia snitch's head. The director, though, blew it. Another real misstep was his telegraphing scenes so we know who's behind a door or that someone has a gun we were stupid and it showed onscreen.

To the judge and jury, this director has went on to make the equally unwatchable A-Team movie that again had a stellar cast and went nowhere.

If you do buy the DVD, the extras are good but the movie itself is way off the mark.

Loaded full of dark humor and some great action scenes Smokin Aces is one of those 'cool' movies. It's basic plot is virtually several groups of hitman going after a mob informer but it gets complicated in the end which really ruins the movie. If it had just stuck to the cheap thrills I would have given it a higher rating. It's worth a rent, not a buy.

Writer/director Joe Carnahan takes a note from Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott in Smokin' Aces, a gleefully violent, nihilistic, sexist romp. Carnahan isn't trying to say anything, he just wants to make a slammin' guy flick with lots of shooting and explosions. To this effect, the plot is secondary; all that matters is this elaborate situation he sets up where an army of bounty hunters all descend upon Lake Tahoe to try to get the bounty on Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven,). The action moves quickly enough that Smokin' Aces seems enjoyable during the viewing, but afterwards people realize how empty is actually is. Smokin' Aces, sadly, is also predictable. Carnahan (Narc) has his own little twist up his sleeve, but for some strange reason, gives most of it away in a few flashbacks that reveal too much. There is little time for character development of any sort. What he does do is a quick montage at the beginning bringing everybody up to speed with Israel's situation, with the different groups of bounty hunters preparing for the job.

The characters are indeed diverse and over the top, starting with: Ben Affleck as a bail bondsman, his two friends who are ex-cops, Bateman as a sleazy lawyer, Georgia Sykes (Keys) and Sharrice Watters (Henson), as the two femme fatals, three insane Nazi like guys known as The Tremors, a torturer who doesn't torture anyone in the film, a man who changes identity and masks, Buddy Piven Israel and his crew, Reynolds( Richard Messner) and Liotta (Donald Carruthers) as the two FBI agents and their superior Garcia. Seems like a lot of people and it is, but you won't get confused as to who's who at any point. Piven plays his usual fast talking dirt bag character, only this time he has a few card tricks to flash the audience.

HASH(0xa6401b1c) out of 5 stars It is what it is -- a great-looking, trippy action flick Feb. 11 2007
By Peace Brotha - Published on Amazon.com
Smokin Aces is one of the best eye candy films I have seen in years.

It is full of interesting camera angles, shocks, thrills, humor and characters that you will remember. I for one appreciate the fact that almost none of the actors were cast as you'd expect. And while SA is not what I would call a retro-style film, there are more than enough nods to the 1970's that fans of that culture like me will really get a kick out of this film's style.

And WHAT a soundtrack.

Note: there are so many plots and subplots interwoven throughout SA that you will surely need to see this movie once more to catch everything, including some of the more profound statements about the darker sides of the human psyche that the director may or may not be trying to comment on.

Some of the reviewers say there's too much violence. Hello. That's what these types of movies are about. Period.

All in all, SA is a great-looking and trippy action flick that doesn't try to be something that it isn't: "deep." Don't look for Academy Award winning ANYTHING here. But be prepared for an interesting ride that you will surely want to take again, and in 20 years it will be a lot more acclaimed than it is now. Just wait and see.

I really wanted this to be good. You look at the list of characters that star in this and you figure it has got to be good. I was hoping for a semi serious picture with a great story like Ocean's Eleven(the remake). Instead this was more of a Hong Kong over the top action film with buckets of bloody killings. I don't mind pictures like that, but the box said drama comedy. I'm not sure where the comedy was in the movie. The acting is fine, and there certainly was some offbeat characters. Unfortunately everything has a ton of promise, but very little hits the mark. This was decent to watch and entertaining, but I wasn't blown away like I would have hoped. Certainly worth renting, and probably a buy for a lot of people. I would watch it first rather than making a blind buy.

HASH(0xa654084c) out of 5 stars Sure it won't win any awards, but it was still fun to watch. June 21 2007

Believe it or not, this movie was actually relatively entertaining. Even when some pretty small parts are involved, I am always interested in seeing a movie with a cast like this. Let me list a few people who made appearances in Smokin' Aces: Ryan Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven, Ben Affleck, Peter Berg, Common, Andy Garcia, Alicia Keys, "that girl from Hustle & Flow," Jason Bateman and Matthew Fox.

The movie was completely ridiculous. Ryan Reynolds started to go a little overboard at the end, but other than that the movie does not take itself seriously at all. If you try to take this movie seriously, you will be grossly disappointed. Smokin' Aces combined just about every possible stereotype into a murder-for-hire movie, but did it to be satirical and did not come across as cliché. It was so ridiculous, in fact, that I considered it almost on par with a Quentin Tarantino flick.

Call me crazy, but I liked Smokin' Aces...for what it was. I was looking for an off-the-wall, shoot-'em-up, action movie and that is exactly what I got. I was even impressed with the creativity behind the story (though the end was somewhat of a let down).

HASH(0xa65401a4) out of 5 stars "Way Past Words" ~ Prostitutes, Perverts, Psychos & Professionals of the Murderous Kind April 18 2007
By Brian E. Erland - Published on Amazon.com

`Smokin' Aces' released on DVD in '07 is the next step in the evolution of madness and mayhem begun by the '94 cult classic `Pulp Fiction' and redefined in '03 with `Kill Bill.' Like the two previously mentioned films "Smokin' Aces' presents a display of outlandish, wacked out "bad guys" and hard nosed, amoral "good guys" that will keep you riveted to the screen. The action is fast and furious, the bloodshed plentiful and the plot turns will keep you wondering where this film is taking you until the very end.

This movie is definitely not for everyone [especially children] but if you like this genre of film you'll love this one!

HASH(0xa65404ec) out of 5 stars Smokin' Hot Feb. 4 2008
By Christian Puzder - Published on Amazon.com
Format: HD DVD
In Sum: Smokin' Hot
Should you Buy? Yes

Smokin' Aces is the second most appropriately violent movie, next to Clockwork Orange. Written and Directed by Joe Carnahan, Smokin' Aces is the complicated story of a second-rate magician with a large bounty apparently on his head for selling out his crime lord friends to the FBI. The cast is great, Jeremy Piven, Andy Garcia and the brutally sexy Alicia Keys - who by the way has some great legs (I did not know this). It is an entertaining movie you will think in some respects was directed by Quenten Tarantino - but wasn't. It falls just short of Resservoir Dogs and Fight Club in terms of script and direction, but fits perfectly next to those movies on your shelf, if organized by Genre and then quality. Maybe you go alpha, I don't know, my system is kind of random ... like this post.

As for the HD quality - It looks like this film was made for an HD picture. The shots were great and when necessary, large in scope. Jeremy Piven's character gets put through the wringer in this movie and the close-ups of his face truly revealed how stressed this character was. Adding to the effect was the detail that HD allows. I cannot see this deatil in an SD format. Similarly, Alicia Keys' thighs looked really good in HD - rawr. Ultimately, Being a bloodbath, this movie needed the details that a high resolution picture allows. At certain times my wife had to turn her head away from the carnage. I have never seen her do that before, and I doubt an SD picture would have the same effect. Ultimately, this was one of the best non-effects based HD DVDs I think I have ever seen. That said, as I watch more and more HD DVD, I find myself looking for effects based movies. Regardless, this picture is great - thank goodness its a Universal HD DVD.

As for the audio: spot on as our friends across the pond would say. Seriously spot on. Crime dramas can be very effectively mastered in HD audio, like Smokin' Aces and Miami Vice. The audio mix added to the environment and was very well mastered.

Amazingly, this HD DVD had a very cool menu animation and employed U-Control. U-Control is Universal's use of HDi to display extra film information in a Picture-in-Picture format - a feature that is lacking on Pre-Profile 2.0 Blu-ray players. So far the implementation has been spotty. I can, however, attest that the U-Control feature in this HD DVD is awesome, providing information otherwise found by using IMDB and the `internets'. After experiencing this U-control HD DVD, I re-watched Miami Vice paying special attention to the U-Control features. It really is a new movie experience; one exclusive to HD DVD.
