Review

“…Hunter is back at the top of his game.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“It’s a troubling moral position, of course, the idea of the sniper as a man of courage, and Hunter makes the most of it, demanding that the reader rethink common cultural assumptions about good and evil. Those philosophical underpinnings give the narrative depth, but finally, as all Bob Lee fans know, it comes down to 'straight killing time.' And so it does, in a ramped-up, high-tech High Noon finale that will leave even unsympathetic readers gasping. As always, Hunter makes it work with precise, detail-rich prose that strips the faux glamour from gun fighting and leaves only the skills of the combatants set against the horrors they wreak.”—Bill Ott, Booklist, starred review

“In his guns-a-poppin’ latest, Hunter pits his series hero against a nest of sharp-shooting vipers. [D]ust off the OK Corral. Even the somewhat squeamish, and even certifiable gun-dummies, may once again find chivalric, heroic Bob Lee just about irresistible.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Hunter's thrillers are always taut, exciting, and well written, and his latest is no exception. There's also a lot of gun and tech talk as Swagger uses decades' worth of skills to stay a step or three ahead of the baddies. Swagger fans will not be disappointed.”—Robert Conroy, Library Journal

"Stephen Hunter’s I, Sniper brings back one of the great characters in modern thrillerdom, Bob Lee Swagger, everyone’s favorite lethal, dour Southerner. I kind of want Swagger to meet up with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher one day, in a contest to see who could say the least while doing the most damage."—Malcolm Gladwell

Book Description

IT TAKES A SEASONED KILLER . . . TO HUNT ONE.

Four famed ’60s radicals are gunned down at long range by a sniper. All the evidence—timeline, ballistics, forensics, motive, means, and opportunity—points to Marine war hero Carl Hitchcock. Even his suicide. The case is almost too perfect.

Recruited by the FBI to examine the data, retired Marine sharpshooter Bob Lee Swagger penetrates the new technology of the secretive sniper world to unravel a sophisticated conspiracy run by his most ruthless adversary yet—a marksman whose keen intellect and pinpoint accuracy rival his own. But when the enemy and his deadly henchmen mistake Bob for the hunted, it’s clear that some situations call for a good man with a gun . . . and the guts to use it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heroic Look at Being Faithful . . . No Matter What, Feb 13 2010

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (#1 HALL OF FAME)
"Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful."

--Proverbs 27:6

This is the first Bob Lee Swagger book that I've read, and I was pleased that I picked I, Sniper up. Although there's clearly a lot of background to the series that I don't know, the story was perfectly clear to me as a standalone offering.

This book could have been entitled: CSI-Sniper Rifles. The technical sides of shooting play a huge role in this story and provide many thought-provoking discoveries and observations. I don't know much about that subject and found the material to be clear and accessible.

Bob Lee Swagger is a wonderful character whose most appealing qualities are well displayed in this book. I especially enjoyed the tension between Swagger playing roles in assisting the FBI by doing what they wanted him to do and taking off on his own when that was the best way to serve the FBI's needs.

The set-up for the story seemed pretty strange at first: someone is killing leftist radicals from the 1960s with a sniper rifle. Why would anyone still care? Then, Stephen Hunter impressed me by providing lots of good reasons for that set-up to be in place. I felt respected as a reader for one of the few times recently while reading a thriller. It was a good feeling.

There's also a very long sequence in here demonstrating how the press can be manipulated by those who understand how to take advantages of biases. I found that part of the plot to be pretty boring until I realized that there was a purpose to all the slow-moving "action" in this part of the story. I would have preferred, however, that this aspect of the book had been a lot shorter.

The last 100 pages were especially rewarding, well worth some of the moments that lagged overly much before that.

I admire Stephen Hunter's willingness to use characters in his book that are very thinly disguised versions of real characters. That aspect added a lot of realism to the book because it's impossible not to add what you know about those real-life people to the characters in the story.

If you enjoy seeing the good guys take on the bad guys, you won't find many books that make the conflict any more rewarding.

(REAL NAME)
After the truly awful 'Night of Thunder' (see my review) I'm pleased to say that Stephen Hunter has redeemed himself with 'I, Sniper'. Not the best book of the series but solid and at least I'm pretty sure that it was actually written by Mr. Hunter. Welcome back and thanks, looking forward to 'Dead Zero'.
