A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. The great, grizzled, Australian character actor Jack Thompson (the idealistic lawyer in Breaker Morant) is the tough, older horseman who takes the lad under his wing. The director, George Miller (not to be confused with the action-master who made the Mad Max films) allows costar Kirk Douglas to mug and grimace and prance far too much in a duel role as a pair of lovable old coots who hate each other's guts. Luckily, one of the coots has a handsome daughter (Sigrid Thornton, an Elizabeth McGovern-type with grit), who also has a way with horses. So it isn't all rocks and pine trees. --David Chute

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Aussie through and through. March 1 2014

I am an Australian living in Canada. I lived in Snowy River country for 30 years and the filming made me really homesick. The actors portrayed the characters perfectly. Made me proud to be Australian.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, Blu Ray rendering is almost there. May 21 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I am quite sure you'll have seen the movie elsewhere, before you consider buying it on Blu Ray. And one of the big reasons we lay out the cash to buy it on Blu Ray is because we like a super clear picture and great audio to boot.

I was disappointed to find out that this great old movie had poor Blu Ray rendering on quite a few sections. I would estimate perhaps some 30% of the movie has a grainy fuzziness that took away from the pure visceral enjoyment because the fuzzy scenes would appear in rude contrast to the good stuff. I found the audio far less obvious, and so perhaps 10% of that was mismatched.

For technical comparisons, I watch on higher end audio visual equipment all up to date and capable of superb output. Watching something like the Bourne Trilogy on this setup is just riveting, and while I really like the characters (etc) of the Snowy River movie, I would liken its quality to more like a good DVD.

I am glad I have it, and its not worth the effort to send it back. My true wish is that they will do a better job of the rendering (visually) and I would buy the better copy (and the sequel!). My rating is actually 3.5 stars, but that option doesn't exist here.

5.0 out of 5 stars The hills come alive! April 6 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This my all-time favourite movie, I own it on VHS, DVD and now BLU-RAY, the picture quality of the BLU-RAY is astonishing, I see details now that I have not seen all those years whenever I watched the movie.

Now I can make out the stichting on the bridles and saddles, and the colours of foliage are more vivid then ever, if you like this movie, it is worth the up-grade from DVD to BLU-RAY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, with beautiful music and scenery!! July 12 2004
Format:VHS Tape
I was only nine years old when this movie came out, and I have loved it ever since I first saw it in the theater. I am a horse lover and rider myself, and so I'm sure that's a big part of why this movie is one of my favorites, but I think even people who have never even been around horses can appreciate it. The acting is excellent, and the scenes with the horses galloping across the gorgeous Australian countryside, are wonderful. One of my favorite things about it is the music. The music is some of the most beautiful I've ever heard. The soundtrack is definitely one of the highlights of the film. And of course, I can't forget one of the most incredible scenes I've ever seen in any horse movie, which is where Tom Burlinson gallops his horse down an unbelievably steep mountainside. My family and I have always wondered if this was actually done by a stunt rider, or if it involved trick photography. Either way, it is a very impressive scene, and will leave you in complete awe. This will always be on my list of all-time favorite films, and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Western-type genre, or anyone who loves horses.
