This series is genius, and gets better and better with subsequent viewings.
When I first saw it I had the same reaction many have - prolonged mild confusion punctuated by moments of humor. Thank heaven my fondness for Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher compelled me to persevere because as I kept watching I realized a brilliant cumulative musical-comedic nexus was slyly building. The episodes became funnier and funnier as I was drawn into their delicious world of drunken sex, self-loathing narcissism (yes, that's right), absurdity, and violence. Phrases like "sketch comedy" don't adequately cover what this is. It might meet that definition technically but is something much greater than the sum of that formula. It is a clever and tightly woven dark comedy universe with a first-rate soundtrack, disguised as a kooky, toilet humor sketch show. It's like Columbo: perhaps bumbling and mediocre on the surface, but sharp as a razor underneath.
I've now watched the whole series from beginning to end many times, but had only a third-rate, recorded from television copy obtained by debasing myself in ways of which I wish never to speak again. I'm delighted that it has finally been released on Region 1 DVD so I leave that foul chapter behind me. Thank you, Severin! The second disc of music is a treasure as well and will provide much joy (and a few surprises!) to any fan of the series.
