The Social Worker by Michael Ungar,
This review is from: Social Worker, The (Paperback)
Michael Ungar does a fine job of capturing the conflict inherant in the practice of social work, especially child protection. We enter the profession with a committment to treat our clients with respect, to "hear" what they have to say, to honour their history and life story which has brought them to this juncture in their life, and yet, we all know that what we must respect above all else, is the inviolate need to ensure the safety of a child. It is a complex system in which we work balancing client need, budget constraints, weak legislation, human dignity, poverty, and often flawed human beings - both client and practitioner. Michael has given readers a glimpse of the world which social workers inhabit. He is a gifted writer and the book would be a marvellous addition to the required reading list of any school of social work. It offers many opportunities for discussion of ethics, belief systems, opportunity for change, poverty, human rights and more. My one wish for the book would be that he had included material about the other 42 cases on Joey's caseload, so as to give readers a more realistic portrayal of the stresses and responsibilities inherant in having multiple cases all vying for the time, skill, and attention of one social worker. Even though he mentions these other cases in passing (usually around the need for computer recording), too often it seems as if this one, albeit extended and deeply troubled family, is his full time job. A novel full of truths about the world of social workers and clients,
By
This review is from: Social Worker, The (Paperback)
If you've ever worked in the field of social work (which I have), then you'll immediately recognize the characters in this story. You can't help but empathize with the desperate and needy, and admire the way that Joey (the social worker and hero of the story) tackles the barriers in his clients way. The storyline is believable, even when graphic, and the characters suck you in so that you NEED to know what is going to happen to them. The writing is tight and adrenaline infused, which made this book very hard to put down.

Riveting,
This review is from: Social Worker, The (Paperback)
This book is a must read for anyone who works within bureaucracies! This very real portrayal of a social worker trying to cope with the limits and restrictions of a system is mesmerising. As is the vivid narrative of the desperation people will be pushed to when rules over-ride human needs and common-sense. Michael Ungar has written a captivating first novel.
