Somewhat misleading title,
This review is from: Solar Power Your Home For Dummies (Paperback)
This book doesn't go into very much detail about actually powering a home with solar panels, especially off grid. Don't expect to read this and know how to "do it yourself" as the information here is more of a basic overview. There is a lot of discouraging remarks in the book especially in regards to off grid systems, rather than talking more about various techniques or technologies for off grid systems, the author encourages the use of an on grid system because its "easier, cheaper, and safer".If you use a contractor, which this book encourages a fair bit, its no more difficult for you either way whether on grid or off grid. Cheaper depends on what and how many power hookup and services fees you have to pay and taxes on them which are there regardless of power you put back into the system, and how much energy you actually need i.e. the size of system and efficiency of appliances etc. (Also in many rural areas the electric grids are at capacity and will not allow for an on grid solar system even if you want to) As to safety even operating a table saw or car for that matter can be incredibly dangerous if you don't have a clue as to what you are doing. Overall I found the book not to be what I was expecting and fairly negative in many ways, I'm giving it 3 stars simply because of the non-electrical and other simple solar projects that are in the book that I ultimately found to be the most interesting part. The book is okay for someone with no knowledge whatsoever of solar but for information on off grid applications and in depth instruction on installations the book isn't too much help and might even manage to "scare you" out of doing something you really want to.
