What a powerful and moving story. I took me until the end to remember that it is based on the true story. I was in tears.

Simply Moving,

This review is from: Soldier's Girl (DVD)
I purchased this movie because I was curious after seeing some YouTube tidbits and some of the interviews.I am primarily a Lee Pace fan so that also helped in the decision-making. After watching this movie I am in awe. The story was touching and they (writers, producers, actors) approached the subject matter with sensitivity, reality and class without falling victim to the stereotypical. This could have been just another twisted, smut filled movie but instead it has brains, heart, guts and balls. As a heterosexual woman I was not in the least offended or put off by the love scenes. Because that's what they were; love scenes. Not some "oh let's get the two male actors to make out onscreen to shock the masses" gratuitous scenes plucked out of third-rate cinema. Troy Garity brings innocence to his role that reminds us that Winchell was still young at the time of his relationship with Calpernia but still possessed a maturity and presence of self seldom found in men his age. Lee Pace could have portrayed an over-the-top, flamboyant Calpernia and fallen victim to yet another stereotype but instead he chose to represent her with class, poise and that hint of insecurity that reminds us all that under the press-on nails, frilly tops and fabulous wigs lies a woman on a knife's edge between the past she desperately wants to run away from and the future she wants to run towards. Both actors do a fantastic job and are, above all else, believable in their roles and I'm not ashamed to say I was in tears by the end and disgusted by the amount of prejudice still in this world. I will definitely be watching this movie again and again.

Brutally Honest,

This review is from: Soldier's Girl (DVD)
Living in Nashville during the timeframe of these events, and having known Calpernia as a wonderful onstage presense, watching this fine movie is like going back in time. From the uncanny resemblence to the showbar at the "connection" in Nashville, the bar that was actually the background for most of the story, to the very real setting that is Fort Campbell, barracs and all. A SOLDIER'S GIRL is a very honest very real portrayal of actual events as they happened. Lee Pace's version of Calpernia is a little more direct that the real gal, but otherwise dead on. Troy Garity's performance is riviting as the soldier who found his perfect girl! This is as real as it gets!!Highly recommended!!!
