Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard--falling from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around. Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge. If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don't break them both first.
Tensions grow and the abuse worsens as the final days of senior year march toward an explosive conclusion in this dark new tale from the author of Cracked Up To Be.

This review is from: Some Girls Are (Paperback)
Regina hates being the designated driver. The parties aren't fun to begin with, but when she has to be there sober it is practically unbearable. One night when she is ready to go, Regina tries to find her best friend so she can get her in the car and drive home. She finds Anna in the den with Donnie, passed out after a night of too much drinking. Unfortunately, Donnie, Anna's boyfriend, is just aware enough to force himself on Regina against her will. She barely gets away. Regina runs to the house of the only one of her friends that didn't attend the party and tells her everything that's happened. Together, Kara and Regina decide it's best to not say anything. Regina considers Anna important enough to keep quiet about the attempted rape in order to remain her best friend. The problem is...Kara doesn't keep her mouth shut. She tells Anna what happened just as quick as she can in order to push Regina out of the second-in-command spot of the Fearsome Fivesome. By the time school rolls around on Monday, Regina finds herself frozen out of the group. Life for Regina becomes a living nightmare. Her friends launch a systematic attack against her. She suffers physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the people that know her the best. Never has she felt so alone. SOME GIRLS ARE is an important book to read. Bullying is such a big issue in today's society, and Courtney Summers paints a very realistic picture for the reader. Reviewed by: Karin Librarian

wonkawonkaJM,
This review is from: Some Girls Are (Paperback)
Summary: Regina is a teenager that has to deal with her best friend; Anna being extremely mean to her after a girl in the clique, Kara backstabs Regina to get next to Anna. Regina goes through so much hurtful things happening to her at school and everyone turning against her, she's to frightened about what happened at her boyfriend, Josh's party (Donnie attempting to rape her) that she doesn't tell her mom about any of the situations at school and her losing all her friends and her boyfriend. A loner at school, Michael(Anna & her ruined his school life then his mom dead) befriends her so he could embraces her in front of the entire school but they end up falling for each other. Regina gets caught having feelings for Michael by Anna and is told to make a decision that could ruin her life and their friendship forever, befriend Anna and her crew and lose Michael all together or pick Michael and ruin his life even more and then lose him for being the reason why he loses his entire school life.Review: This book is an amazing read for teenagers that have dealt with issues with their friends. Regina is a realistic teenager who must deal with major emotional abuse and cyber bullying from her best friend and their clique that she got kicked out when she is accused of "sleeping" with Anna's boyfriend. Often, I felt the anger and the sadness that Regina felt while her friends decided to ruin her life, I felt the depression and anger and sadness Michael was feeling while talking to Regina about his mom. I remember crying many times while reading this book. While reading this book, I remind how much it hurt when my friend decided to be mean to me and turn everyone against me for calling a girl, a very mean word because I was upset, lonely and felt like she was taking my friend from me. This book taught me a lot about high school and the meaning of friendships and taught me how much you can do to protect your friend's life and feelings. I'm a tenth grader and in the two years I've been in high school, I've seen many issues similar to this book, it tells the reader a lot about how high school is run, how much the popular crew has say in and how much they can ruin your life if you cause one of them to hurt. I recommend this book to grade 8 & 9 girls to teach them how much they should try to avoid the popular clique also each one of the girls in the popular clique should read it to teach them just because they chose to become one of the popular people doesn't mean that the rest of the school dissevers the rudeness and the life changing affects from that clique.

This review is from: Some Girls Are (Paperback)
Summary: Regina use to be at the top of the social food chain in her high school. That is until someone wanting to take her place starts spreading rumours about her and her best friend's boyfriend. Now she finds herself frozen out of her group and at their mercy as they taunt, tease and harass her. Finding new friends is difficult as Regina quickly realizes how horrible she has been in the past. As the abuse continues and there is the possibility of a new love interest, Regina must decide between redemption and revenge.Review: Some Girls Are definitely has a Mean Girls feel to it, as Summers provides readers with an inside look at the types of power hungry cliques that exist everywhere. I found the story very relatable for both those who have experienced the terror of these types of people and those who have found themselves accidentally caught up in such activity. I liked that Regina got to play both sides because it showed how easy it is to go along with some of the bullying that takes place. I also enjoyed that Summers didn't make a lot of excuses for Regina, making her a much more compelling and complicated character. Overall, the story is very well written and the style of writing makes for a fast and engaging read (lots of quick sentences and fast paced dialogue). My only complaint was that it moved too fast and I wanted more!
