Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Night Whispers, McNaught's first romantic suspense novel (after a host of historicals), hit the charts hard, and this solid follow-up looks to do the same. Legendary stage actress Leigh Kendall is starring in a Broadway play, lives in a fabulous apartment and adores her husband, Logan Manning, a handsome, rich and virile businessman. After an afternoon performance, she's off to meet Logan in their country cabin, where he's promised an evening of lust and love in front of a roaring fire. Her life changes forever when she drives over an embankment in a snowstorm and barely escapes death. After waking up bruised and battered in the hospital, she finds Logan missing, her rival performing her part in the play, a creepy stalker sending expensive flowers and the evil Michael Valente, a business acquaintance of her husband's, being suspiciously attentive. Leigh checks out of the hospital and begins a frantic search for Logan aided by a team of detectives from the NYPD. As the search intensifies, she begins to learn secrets that expose her golden marriage as a fraud and her husband as a serial cheater. A romantic subplot features two of the cops investigating her case, the chiseled Lt. Mitchell McCord and rookie detective Samantha Littleton, who partner up in more ways than one. Leigh proves to be a stalwart if privileged heroine who finds a knight in shining armor in an unexpected corner of her past. The suspense is not terribly suspenseful, and several plot threads go uncollected, but romance is McNaught's bread and butter and she serves it up in abundance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to the caliber of her earlier works, Jun 6 2003

This review is from: Someone to Watch Over Me: A Novel (Hardcover)
Judith excels at the poignant, classic love stories, and has written some of my all time favorite historical and contemporary romances.

Following the current trend, in this book she has continued her transition to romantic suspense. I like romantic suspense, but not when Judith McNaught writes it. Without looking at her other novels, this was an okay book. The secondary characters were a lot of fun, and they were my favorite part of the book. Unfortunately, I just didn't like Leigh as a character and I found Leigh's plotline to be unbelievable. I've read Judith's arguements as to why the plot should be believeable, but they all come down to "the story wouldn't have worked any other way." That says to me that the story should have been scrapped. Compared to her other books this is a huge disappointment.

If you've never read JM before, try Perfect, Paradise or Something Wonderful for examples of divinely wonderful romance. If you liked this book, you'll adore her others.

I have waited for what seems like a lifetime of this book. It was well worth the wait. The romance was so beautiful that I literally had tears in my eyes. I have not cried during a book since Matt and Meredith and Julie and Zack. This book was truly exceptional and I loved every word.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of McNaught's finest., April 8 2003

This review is from: Someone to Watch Over Me: A Novel (Hardcover)
I've always held the highest regard for Judith McNaught's writing. I think she is one of the very best in talented writers. And she didn't let me down with "Someone To Watch Over Me". I read the book in 1.5 days because I simply couldn't put it down. I think Valente had me completely mesmerized. But I'll have to admit, I was equally pleased with Samatha and Mack and the way that relationship evolved. More than this, the romance built in such a way that you could feel the characters falling in love with each other. And the suspense... well, I guess I read too much because I had it just about figured out before I got to the end. Still, the story was great, the writing was wonderful and as usual, McNaught didn't let me down. I have to respect this author's ability to write a story about politics that runs so true to life. I wonder how she got to be so smart. I have to say that I will highly recommend this book to my friends for future reading. Thanks, Judi. I'm looking forward to the next novel. Keep going.
