Product Description

Album Description

The fourteenth studio album from Buckingham based prog rockers Marillion sees the band once again take a musical changein direction, choosing to produce a more song based, minimal record than many of its predecessors. The result of this is that 'Something Else' is Marillion's most accessible effort to date, an album full of understated, melodic gems which showcase the band's ability to develop and diversify whilst retaining their trademark sound. Includes the single 'Thank You Whoever You Are.' 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars Am amazing new album from the best-kept secrets in the music industry!, July 21 2007

This review is from: Somewhere Else (Audio CD)
Somewhere Else is described by hardcore Marillion fans (of which I'm undeniably one) as 'a grower'. But most of their albums, because of the band's uncomprimising dedication to exploring different sounds and creative approaches to arrangements, do demand a good listen several times for it to 'click'. Somewhere Else is a great, mature album, with Hogarth's patent vocals that can break the heart of the most stoic gent. If you're already a Marillion fan, there's still that characteristic Marillion edge, so fear not! I've only found a few published reviews from rock mags and the like, and they have been very positive about the band's evolution and artful, quality production on this latest album.

Standout tracks include the title track, Thank You Whoever You Are, Voice from the Past and The Other Half. Faith is one of the purest love songs I've heard to date. Most Toys and See It Like A Baby are both lyrically straightforward rock tunes that are great fun when you're in the mood! Absolutely worth buying, but if you're a casual listener, as one reviewer put it, you will probably miss the point by throwing this disc on in the background while doing the ironing...

Rather, this is a highly recommended purchase if you're looking for top-quality music by gifted musicians and one of the most underexposed vocalists of our time. And enjoy high-quality, artistic rock that has been influenced by the unexpected - Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright, Joni Mitchell as well as the more obvious Beatles, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, etc... Then go buy the rest of the back catalogue and join some of the most dedicated music fans in enjoying this body of work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great background music for a diner party., May 19 2007

Well, Marillion are back at it again! I enjoyed this CD except for track four. I felt the emotional guitar solos I'm used too were somewhat missing except for a couple of times, but Steve still had some nice bits. H was brilliant on vocals! Mark kelly added incredible mood and atmosphere, "was that a mellotron I heard on track 3". It seems this CD is being compared to all those British style pop bands? I always felt Marillion were creating this kinda sound before any of those bands. Marillion has always been a frontrunner in the art of melodic music. Overall it was a very pleasing CD and I look forward to the next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marillion with a touch of Jazz, Mar 22 2007
This review is from: Somewhere Else (Audio CD)
So I went ahead and listened to the advanced promo of the new album.( Now keep in mind I am a huge Marillion fan and have been following them since the early fish days). Overall his new album is pretty good. Marillion has stepped into the jazz rock arena this time. The vocals are great, the music is amazing, the songwriting and lyrics wonderful. As for the production I cannot comment at the time because of the promo clip sound quality . A definite buy. Now the downside. Once again Marillion has those awkward bum tracks that always don't seem to belong eg track 4 "Most toys" In all honesty I wasn't the biggest fan of the marbles album last time around I found it kind of boring but somewhere is a lot better and worth the money. Still waiting for the Marillion Fish reunion!!!! Perhaps they can do an album with both singers
