Product Description

From Amazon.com

Struggling through lineup changes, public indifference and ever-slippery fashions through the 1980s and '90s, the members of Kansas have largely stayed true to their vision and a stubborn core of supporters. Somewhere to Elsewhere rewards that patience with a 20-years-after reunion of the band's original line-up. Kicking off with the would-be sequel, "Icarus II," the suitably heroic tale of a World War II bomber crew, Kansas rumbles through all their musical trademarks: Steve Walsh's soaring vocal display (though the years have slightly curtailed its cruising altitude), thunderous guitar breaks that prove guitarists Kerry Livgren and Richard Williams have indeed heard of Metallica, and some strenuous noodling by violinist Robby Steinhardt. It's a throwback to the band's original vision, one that argues you can go home again, even if that's a place that's been distinctly changed by time. In short, long-time fans should find it a pleasant return to form. --Jerry McCulley

4.0 out of 5 stars Great solo album !!!!, Feb 29 2004

Kerry has made a great solo album here. I'm not so sure the rest were very involved. I hope Steve is more involved in the future. I hope they continue as a band. I'm scared that the Moody Blues syndrome has started to sink in seeing that they are on the continuous "greatest hits tour".

5.0 out of 5 stars Too long waiting, Feb 27 2004

Both for my review and for the band. I bought this CD when it came out and I was taken by surprise, because of the disappointing "Freaks.." These guys have proved, even if they don't release anything else in their careers. Livgren is an excellent composer and the players are awesome. The chemistry is all there, too bad they can't get along. Reccomend it highly

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God they're back!, Feb 12 2004

Steve Walsh's vocals have cleaned up nicely! Having Robby back as violinist really pulls the band together solidly. When I listened to this CD, I was impressed, but I grew to love it more after listening to it several times. It's now one of my favorite Kansas albums. It amazes me how a band can incorporate a violin to blend rock and classical into grand, sweeping themes. If you like Styx, Rush, Yes, you'll enjoy this album. If you take the time to read the lyrics, you'll understand why Kerry Livegrin is so important to the success of this album.I saw them in concert Nov. 2003 and they played a new tune with a middle eastern flair. It sounded great and I look forward to hearing it on their next album.
