I really enjoy Kim Vogel Sawyer's novels and Song of My Heart does not disappoint. Sawyer creates characters with depth, and conviction. I love the struggles and difficult situations that she forces on them. I really enjoyed the way that this story unfolded, the drama, challenges, and danger were very real and well done. Song of My Heart is light and enjoyable read that I'm glad I didn't miss.I highly recommend this book to readers of historical fiction and fans of Kim Vogel Sawyer. Lovely and Melodious,
By
This review is from: Song of My Heart (Paperback)
Fans of Kim Vogel Sawyer will be delighted with her newest release from Bethany House Publishers,* entitled Song of My Heart. As with many of her previous works, this newest novel falls into the Historical Fiction genre, but could fit into both Inspirational and Romance categories as well. Set in a small Kansas town in the late 19th century, Song of My Heart is a sweetly flowing, melodic story of love and forgiveness, but not without a share of drama and adventure, and even a touch of mystery, all of which came with prohibition laws and their consequent bootlegging operations.A generally expected trademark of Kim Vogel Sawyer's books is that her always colorful cast of characters will become as dear to you as beloved friends, and will captivate you from the first pages with their sweetness, and sense of physical - not merely imaginary - existence. Sadie Wagner the heroine, and Thad McKane the hero, both fulfill these expectations excellently. Likewise, Sadie's desperation to provide for her family, and Thad's desire to clean the blemish from his family's name, will become as important to readers as to each character. Originally a resident of Indiana, Sadie responds to her cousin's invitation to join him in Goldtree, Kansas, where the 'perfect' job awaits her, giving her the means to provide for her beloved family while putting her beautiful singing voice to use. Soon after arriving, however, Sadie realizes that things are not what they appear to be, and that her new employer is hiding dark secrets and creating unlawful plans, both which involve her. Sadie is forced to make decisions that will affect not only herself but the entire community, especially the man she is growing to love - Sheriff Thad McKane. The main theme of the story is of releasing past regrets - of forgiving yourself, and others, for something that is in the past and must be left behind. Thad realizes that he is only accountable for himself, not for the sins of his father before him - basically, he doesn't need to become a preacher to make up for his father's terrible mistakes. Also shown in the story is the importance of trusting in God first and foremost, without leaning only on our own understanding. Sadie finally sees that she need not struggle in caring for her family alone, but that God will care for and protect them all - her most important job is simply to trust Him. Song of My Heart delivers all that readers have come to expect from each one of Kim Vogel Sawyer's stories - simplicity, sweetness, love, and realistic characters. Her books very rarely contain uncomfortable or questionable content, and are simply a joy to read. This novel in particular contained plenty of drama, history, and humor (largely in the form of two very quirky secondary characters!). Everything was tied up perfectly at the end, making the reader reluctant for the story to be over, but content that everything is as it should be. Finally, the writing style in Song of My Heart was very warm and relaxing, making the story truly feel as melodious and lovely as one of Sadie's own heartfelt songs. ***Note: I received this book free of charge for review purposes, courtesy of Bethany House Publishers and Graf-Martin Communications. I would like to say thank you very much for sending it to me.

My first Sawyer book...and I really liked it!!!,
By Katie McCurdy "Legacy of a Writer" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Song of My Heart (Paperback)
While I have several of Kim Vogel Sawyer's books in various levels on my to-be-read pile, her newest release, Song of My Heart, is the first one I've read. And it was great--the characters, the story plot, the writing style...it all pulled me deep into the story.Sadie Wagner came across as a very sweet tempered, gentle, loving girl. Within the first chapter, I was intrigued with her, springing easily to the next chapter to see what would happen to Sadie as she began her new job away from home. And, of course, Thad McKane made the perfect hero to complete this story as the reluctant Sheriff. Can't help but like him! Song of My Heart weaves in a very intricate and unique plot--complete with underhand dealings, blackmail, illegal liquor, and guilty consciences. And the way Sadie was coerced into wearing the revealing gown and singing those bawdy songs...I was holding my breath for Sadie! I really liked Sawyer's writing style. It drew me in, putting me right into the little town of Goldtree. And her characters--wow, how much fun they all were. Melva and Shelva were a hoot! Sometimes, when authors jump between a bunch of character point-of-views, it can get confusing. But Saywer pulls it off no problem in Song of My Heart! I know for a fact that I'm more eager to open her other books in my to-be-read pile. And definitely keeping an eye out for her future books! I reviewed this book for the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance. Thanks to the publishers, Bethany House, for sending me my review copy. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

Charming Entertainment,
By Writer_for_Christ "Casey" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Song of My Heart (Paperback)
"Song of My Heart" is a completely charming story filled with quirky characters, escalating tension, sweet romance and just a few chuckle-worthy fiction moments.I've got to start with the secondary characters, Melba, Shelba and Asa have got to be the most outrageous characters - not in a bad way - just in a bit of the ridiculous funny. Get into the way Asa (the villain) thinks and you just might want to chuckle - I did. (wink) I loved Thad. A strapping hero, but with a heart of gold, though he isn't without his troubles for sure. I love the subtleties of his character, his growth and realization through the course of the story. You can't get any more emotionally tormented than Sadie. Though I've never been in her kind of situation to need to provide for her family, I could completely understand and feel for that pull toward what's right and what she needs to do. The ending was definitely my favorite part of the novel. So many parts of the story came together for a well written ending that charmed and entertained this reader. Reading is all about entertainment and I found it easy and enjoyable to escape for a few hours into "Song of My Heart". It's a delightful read and a ready addition to my collection. This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

A heartwarming story demonstrating the importance of grace, forgiveness, and trusting God,
By Wrenn - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Song of My Heart (Paperback)
Sadie Wagner has always been devoted to her family. So when her stepfather is injured in a mining accident and is unable to work, she decides to leave home and accept a position as a clerk at a mercantile in Goldtree, Kansas. Goldtree also offers the opportunity for Sadie to use her God-given singing talent -though the promised opera house is far different from what she imagined. With her family needing every cent she can provide, Sadie will do anything to keep her job.Thad McKane comes to Goldtree to investigate reports of an illegal bootlegging operation. Once he finds the culprits and earns enough money from his work as sheriff, he plans to use it to play for his training to become a minister so that he can clean up the reputation left by his alcoholic father. Thad is immediately drawn to the lovely young singer who performs in Asa Baxter's unusual opera house. However, when he hears her practicing bawdy tunes, he begins to winder if she is far less innocent and godly than she seems. And when Sadie appears to be part of the very crimes that Thad has come to investigate, is there any hope for the Love blossoming between them? Song of My Heart was a well written and extremely interesting novel. The plot was well developed and progressed smoothly. It had many of the same characteristics as other Christian, historical romance novels, but it did have some unexpected twists. The characters were interesting and likable. Sadie's cousin, Sid, changes from a love besotted, brooding teenager to a responsible and smart man during the novel. Sadie and Thad also grow during the novel and understand more about grace, forgiveness, and trusting God as the book progresses and as they face trials they cannot master alone. Both characters, but especially Sadie, have to deal with significant flaws in their own characters and only come to a proper understanding of their failings when they come before God. The growth that these characters experience was my favorite portion of the book. I enjoyed seeing the characters' development, and many of the lessons that they learned can easily be applied to our everyday lives. Overall, the novel was well written, the characters were dynamic, and the themes were clear and applicable. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new novel to read. I received this novel for free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. |
