Product Description

From Amazon.com

The diminutive one travels back to his Brooklyn youth for both the sound and story of his recent, ill-fated Broadway musical. Unlike the heavily produced Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints, there's a sweet simplicity to this delicate blend of doo-wop choirs, Latino rhythms, jazz horns and acoustic instrumentation. Meanwhile, Simon's true-life gangsta tale should be viewed as an earthy flipside to Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Unlike the play, the album as a whole is grade-A Simon (which is all the man's ever produced, One Trick Pony excepted). --Jeff Bateman

2.0 out of 5 stars Apparently I'm coated in plastic., Oct 2 2006

One other reviewer said you'd have to be coated in plastic not to see this is the world's all-time greatest CD. Well OK, count me as wrapped in polymer!

I am a HUGE Paul Simon fan, but this is not good. I never saw the musical, maybe that's the problem, because without it, the whole things lacks context, and honestly, musically, I'm sorry but it's not compelling. I still love Paul Simon, just not this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars His Best Since Hearts and Bones, Jun 28 2004

Being a man of few published words, I will let the album speak for itself. It is Paul Simon at the top of his game. Every Song is a Gem and you would have to be coated in plastic for this brillance not to move you. The first, middle and ending song are pop genius. For me, this album belongs up there with Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds and Simon's Hearts and Bones and Graceland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing - how did the musical tank??, May 18 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs from the Capeman (Audio CD)
The music on this cd is incredible. I don't understand how the musical didn't make it. Like a prior reviewer, i'm writing to up the average rating on this so listeners will take a chance on this.
