Songs from Bear in the Big Blue House, which sends kids two and older an open invitation to a gigglefest, is bursting at the seams with simple melodies, goofy voices and loopy, encouraging lyrics that linger. This 24-track is a testament to the late Jim Henson's genius for conjuring characters that bounce off one another with a just-right mix of confusion and harmony. An offshoot of the Disney Channel television show of the same name, Songs boasts the familiar Muppet-like housemates: caring and compassionate Bear; Tutter the high-strung mouse; orange Ojo, a junior bear; otters Pip and Pop; and Treelo the lemur. Bear's warm baritone finds its way onto every last track--he's clearly the head of the big blue household, though hardly its pluckiest resident--but each of the other characters comes clean about a kid-pertinent issue or two on these songs, too. Ojo, for example, relates the unfairness of getting spooked by big, scary monsters every time she goes to bed on "Go to Bed, Sleepy Head", and Tutter tackles his type-A tendencies on "Take Time to Smell the Cheese" and "Quiet Time", In contrast, some of these songs are pure, message-free fun: Pip and Pop momentarily become the Salt 'n' Pepa of the puppet kingdom on "Otter Love", a hip-hoppy ode to the warm fuzzies, and Bear and Treelo bust a toe-twitching move on "The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha". Fans of the show will know most songs and appreciate their accessibility and portability on disc or tape. Those who aren't already tuned in, on the other hand, will take a shine to this oddball crew given this smartly accessible musical introduction. --Tammy La Gorce

We've only had this CD a few days, and have probably listened to it 100 times already. My 2.5 yr. old daughter has only seen the BITBBH Potty Time video and a few other episodes, so you don't have to be a regular viewer to love this music. The only song that I could do without is "Go to Bed, Sleepy Head", and not because it's not a good song (it is), but because Ojo is discussing how when she tries to go to sleep at night, these scary monsters keep coming in her room making scary noises. Of course, the rest of the song is Bear reassuring her that everything is OK., etc. But it seems to have planted a seed in my daughter's head that there could be scary monsters in her room! Yikes! We hadn't quite gotten to that stage of development yet, but it was sure to come at some point. So for now, I try to skip it if I can. Having said all that, I still give it 5 stars; it's that good! The rest of the CD is a a nice mix of different styles of music, including a rap tune (Otter Love) that at first seemed a little out of place, but it grows on you. The best are "That's My Name" and "Oops! I Goofed Again", but really they're all great!

Those of us who have resigned ourselves to losing control of our car stereo as the price of a peaceful ride need help. Bear & his buddies provide the therapy. The producers following the vision of the late Jim Henson have outdone themselves and their prodigious Sesame Street reputation by creating a soundtrack for this Disney Channel show (can make me regret not having cable TV) that carries the requisite pro-social messages in lyrics intelligent and intelligible to all ages. My wife and I compete for who has this tape in their car, and our 2.5-year-old has made significant strides in learning language from just wanting to sing along with these infectious melodies. Moreover, the music is not plain-vanilla, one-note ripoffs from children's melodies in the public domain (a la Barney). The range of musical genres backing Bear, Tutter, Treelo, Ojo, Pip & Pop and friends ranges from hip-hop soul grooving you might mistake for Barry White to latin dance rhythms and pop vocals (with the expected ballads and blues). You may not need to buy another music collection for your child for quite some time if you make this investment in your sanity!

If your child (or you, for that matter) is a fan of The Big Blue House, this is a must-have. This CD does not contain every song from BitBBH (a nice idea for a box set!?), but it is a fair sample, and it's fun when one of the CD songs pops up in an episode. The songs are catchy and well-written, and acurately reflect the spirit of the show. What impressed me most was the quality of the production; this is not some thrown together, oh-it's-just-for-kids-so-who-cares-about-quality effort. The song structure and musicianship is outstanding, with different song styles and little flourishes of saxaphone and percussion here and there. These songs stand on their own in terms of quality, though they do not necessarily make much sense without knowing about the characters. My son loves this CD, and quiets down and listens intently when it plays at home or in the car. My wife and I enjoy it too!

I search far and wide for good kids music, and this CD is the absolute best!
My favorite song has to be Dear Grandma, which is the sweetest tribute to grandparents/parents/caregivers ever written. Everytime I hear it I start singing like I'm in the middle of a broadway show.
Otter Love is a cute song that seems like it was taken right off of a Beastie Boys album. Don't let that scare you- the music is superb and the lyrics are all appropriate for any age child. It's just that every single track on this album seems superb.
I also enjoy That's my name, The Bear cha-cha-cha, Brush brush bree, the list goes on.
My 5 year old and three 1 year olds start dancing a jig whenever we cue this one up.
Get it- you will not be disappointed.
Is there another coming soon? Please?

My younger son LOVES LOVES LOVES Bear, so we have a LOT of Bear videos and more than one complete stranger has seen me singing the "Bear Cha Cha Cha" while pushing a stroller. (As someone who has experienced vastly more "Bear" than most normal adults, I find the music to be the best part of the show. Both my husband and I have been caught singing Bear songs at work.) When this CD became available, I of course had to order it, but was unprepared for how enthusiastically the Big Brother 6 year old (who is already just a little too cool for Bear) would respond to it. Everyone loves this CD! If you have little (or big) Bear lovers in your household, you need to buy this CD.

This CD is a bedtime staple for my 3-year old. She cannot go to sleep unless she's heard "L-O-V-E" "Shape of a Bear" and "Baby, Baby." The wonderful thing is that even as your child listens to this music over and over again, you will never tire of it! It's definitely of a higher caliber than most other children's CDs on the market. The songs are silly, well-written, and danceable and most even deal with topics that your child can identify with such as going to the Dr., being scared of monsters, and growing up! I can't recommend this enough and am anxious for the new Bear CD to be released!
