Product Description

From Amazon.ca

Ico weaves the tale of a young boy trying to escape his imprisonment in a large, vacant castle. Along the way, he discovers another captive--a beautiful princess named Yorda. Players control Ico with the goal of escaping the castle with the princess safely in hand.

Although it looks like an adventure game and has some rudimentary action sequences, Ico is mostly about solving puzzles. Players will run, jump, and climb their way through the gargantuan castle as well as figure out which objects and environments are interactive. Yorda is very much a damsel in distress, and isn't nearly as capable as Ico. A great deal of the puzzles require the player to create a safe path for Yorda, who isn't physically able to get to the places Ico can. The puzzles are quite brilliant, although a few are so tough that players will feel like ditching the princess.

Graphics, particularly the lighting effects and animations, are fantastic. The developers did a superb job of conveying the enormity and beauty of the castle. When Ico and Yorda move and interact, their actions seem totally lifelike. The ambient soundtrack and simple controls let the player focus on the tasks at hand. Sony has crafted a very unique game that anyone can play. Few games are as elegant in their simplicity as this puzzler from Sony. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Excellent puzzle design
  • Aesthetically and stylistically brilliant
  • Appropriately understated sound
Cons:
  • Most players will finish it in fewer than 10 hours
  • Battles are too easy

5.0 out of 5 stars The proof about art in video games July 19 2006
By nanoJak
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is the masterpiece. But beware that this is not for first person shooter types, in fact FPS players will find this boring and repetitive and should stay well away. Action, while present, is not what the game is about. It's about mood and atmosphere, it's about getting involved with the hero. It's about the very unusual relationship with the heroine and the way this game uses the controller to cement the bond with her. A friend's wife couldn't stand Yorda, she appeared to be such a nuisance and not very bright throughout the game. But she IS a heroine, you have to stick to it to the end. And you have to hang in there even after the credits roll. It's true that it plays in less than about 7 hours, but my [...] daughter has replayed this game half a dozen times, and I've played it at least twice. In fact I bought a new PS2 just to be able to play this game when the infamous bug with this machine made it impossible to play the game anymore (which has a blue-backed disk). I would even go so far as to say that this game is the absolute proof that there is art in video gaming, in spite of what many well known movie critics like to claim. Just relax, enjoy the puzzles and the story, get involved with the adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing game. Aug 3 2004
One of my friends had this game for almost 2 years and I never played it until a few weeks ago becasue I had nothing else to do. I never thought of playing it because it looked like a pretty lame and boring game. But boy, was I so incredibly wrong.

This is my all time favourite game ever created. I've never played a game so intriging and amazingly fun. The puzzles were hard but beatable and the fighting was something unique that I've never seen before.

I can't remember how long it took me to beat Ico but I think it was somewhere around 8 hours. But those were the best 8 hours of my life (I'm not kidding). Why hasn't there been a sequel to this game? I have no frickin idea. Ico was incredible. Instead of focusing on making crappy sequels to crappy games, why not make a sequel to one of, if not thee, greatest game ever made.

Graphics - 9/10
This graphics are some of the best I've ever seen in any game. I don't know why old games like this and the Bouncer have such incredible graphics.

Gameplay - 10/10
What's there to say, the puzzles are amazing, the fighting is unique and fun and don't forget the collection of sweet weapons to use.

Sound - 9/10
The music is... well there isn't any music, save the rare few in cutscnes or the ending theme. But the sound effects make up for the loss of tunes immensely. The sound is perfect, the clashing of metal, the lowering of a bridge, the splashing of water, it all fits in perfectly.

Replay - 4/10
Sadly, the only downfall I can see in this game is the replaying of it. The puzzles lose most of thier lustre the second time through which was the funnest part the first time. Though it still is fun the second time using the secret weapon which I wont mention to spoil those who haven't seen it yet.

Overall, this game is a must and should be bought immediately. Screw renting, go buy now, you don't know what you're missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you want is freedom Jun 26 2004
But it sure ain't free
pros:
Beautiful graphics
Nice stroyline
Packed with puzzles
Pretty addictive gameplay
beatin the heck outta enemies is pretty fun
Sutible backround music
Nice voice acting(I usally like subbed rather than dubbed)
Following the princess around might get annoying, but for some reason I didin't mind
This game got me emotionally attatched to it
It's short but sweeter than candy
an excellent adventure game
In the end this is a superb game that made me fight back on tears
Cons:
Puzzles can be frustrating(Especially if they have fatal falls)
Leaving the princess behind can cause you to run back(Cuz evil spirits might attack her, when she's ungaurded)
The Chinese version has 2 player Co-op(That's messed up that we don't)

This game really suprized me, I bought it for 15 bux, cuz I had 20, and the clerk told me it was a pretty good game. I tried it and boy I found a jewel out of a pile of rubbish. And this game made me carry a pretty heavy heart, and man it's sad. To those who love Adventue/Action/Strategy, and games that you can get attatched to then this is a nice game to get. If you want a long lasting game, or a game with guts and gore, then this is really not the title for you. I really hope they are working on a sequal to this game

peace
