Who doesn't wish they could unleash fire from their fingertips and make mops come to life? The Sorcerer's Apprentice enjoyably captures this fantasy as a young physics student named Dave (Jay Baruchel, She's Out of My League) learns that he's the inheritor of the powers of Merlin--and suddenly finds himself in the middle of a war between two of Merlin's protégés, Balthazar (Nicolas Cage) and Horvath (Alfred Molina, Spider-Man 2). The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a special-effects blockbuster--but it's a pretty good one, not reaching the charmed heights of Pirates of the Caribbean but so much better than Prince of Persia. It runs out of air toward the end, but before that it's jauntily entertaining, with capable dialogue, clever curlicues of plot, and most importantly delightful performances: Cage maintains a light touch, with enough eccentricity to be interesting but not so much that it derails the momentum; Baruchel continues his nerdy hero streak; supporting performances from Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla) and Alice Krige (best known as the Borg Queen from Star Trek) are comic and creepy respectively; Monica Bellucci (Shoot 'Em Up) and Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) are mostly eye-candy but likable nonetheless; and Molina, as ever, is the best thing in the movie, playing silky villainy with effortless aplomb. All in all, good fun. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sorcerer's Apprentice (blu ray)...Disney's magic comes ALIVE!, Dec 3 2010

Video: It was 1080p 2.40:1. The overall picture quality was quite stunning, with sharp details. One could see the individual shapes of the confetti dropping from the sky in the Chinatown scenes. I originally had very low expectation for this film. But I was pleasantly surprised that the film was actually quite entertaining. There were actually many clever and funny lines in the dialogue. I thought it was also clever that Disney inserted the scene where the Apprentice (Dave) misused his power, ending up flooding the laboratory and all the mops out of control, similar to Mickey's mishap in the Sorcerer's Apprentice in Fantasia, with classical music to boot. (4.5/5)

Audio: The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 was very well done. The sound effects were also very well recorded, where music bounced from front to lateral to rear speakers. Of course, the bass was also very strong, especially in the Dragon/Chinatown scene. (4.5/5)

Overall, it was an entertaining 109 minutes, with action from start to finish, with interesting story-line. Both video and audio presentations were solid. The special effects were well done. Also, thanks to Disney for putting the subtitles within the picture frame (for those with anamorphic lens). This is a movie for the whole family to have fun. Highly recommended.

This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (DVD)
Ten-year old Dave Stutler's ordinary day takes a turn for the weird when, during a class field trip, a note to him written by the girl he likes, Becky, blows away on a breeze (before being picked up by a dog, a cyclist's tire, etc.). Dave chases the note, which inexplicably travels all the way to a strange shop called Arcana Cabana, where it gets sucked through the mail slot. Inside the shop, Dave finds himself face-to-face with master sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage), who has been searching for the Prime Merlinean (Merlin's successor) for millennia. Merlin's dragon ring binds itself to Dave's finger, meaning that Balthazar's long search is finally over; but when Balthazar goes downstairs to retrieve the master spellbook that Dave will need for his training, Dave accidentally knocks over the Grimhold; a nesting doll which imprisons, layer upon layer, evil sorcerers who follow Morgana le Fey, Balthazar's most formidable enemy of all, who is imprisoned in the very first (bottom) layer of the doll. The Grimhold's topmost layer cracks and releases Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina), who, along with Balthazar and a third sorcerer called Veronica, were once Merlin's trusted proteges. Balthazar and Horvath magically battle in the shop, frightening Dave out of his wits. Balthazar succeeds in imprisoning Horvath in a large ceramic vase that will hold him for 10 years, but unfortunately, Balthazar is imprisoned as well. Dave escapes from the shop, throws the Grimhold into the street, and tries to forget everything he's just seen.

Fast-forward ten years, and Dave (Jay Baruchel) is now a 20-year old self-proclaimed physics nerd who gives lectures at the downtown NYU campus and has a huge lab off-campus where he experiments with Tesla coils. One day, Dave discovers Becky in his lecture audience and re-introduces himself to her. Unbeknownst to Dave, however, the 10-year limit on the vase is up, and now Horvath wants the Grimhold - and Dave was the last person he saw holding it.

This movie has a PG rating for "fantasy action violence, mild rude humour, and brief language." My 11-year old loved the movie (as did I) and I didn't have a problem with anything in it; other parents will have to use their own judgement.

I can't wait for the DVD; it looks like it will be released before Christmas!
